I’m a born-and-bred Capetonian with more than 40 years’ experience living in and promoting the seaside community of Muizenberg, along Cape Town’s southern False Bay coastline. Having worked in tourism and welcomed visitors from around the world, I’m passionate about sharing the stories that give this remarkable village its distinctive character.

Although it’s not fully visible from where we’re standing at the moment, I\it's ahead to your left, and it's a favourite among locals, who walk their dogs here, swim and go kayaking, and have picnics on the weekends.

Let's turn right now, onto Cromer Road. Congratulations for surviving Albertyn, that busy truck-filled road! I trust your navigation skills.

While we walk, here is a snippet of possibly useless information! Not many people know that the first ever airmail delivery in South Africa was done in 1911 via mono plane that flew from the Kenilworth Racecourse to Oldham’s Field on the verges of Zandvlei – that vlei we’ve just spoken about, pretty much the first airborne craft to grace the skies above Muizenberg! So many firsts!

We are heading South down Cromer with the mountain on our right. I am convinced that one can see the mountain from any home in Muizenberg! I love the variety of homes. Some of the homes around here look like they were lifted straight out of Victorian London... I like to think Sherlock Holmes is going to come stepping out of one of the semi’s at any given moment, followed by Watson, no doubt. There is a Watson Road just around the corner, and it's had its fair share of old world mystery!

In 2007, the neighbourhood tongues were wagging! A house was going up in Watson Road that looked like no other! I walked past the property every day and slowly but surely, a thing of beauty emerged from the mud and clay. Not everyone was enthralled. It was different… the first all-natural cob house on a South African city street. It's a fully functional wonderful home made of mud, straw, lime and dung. A truly green home. Once the Cob House got the media attention – all the naysayers were suddenly the most passionate supporters! We’re not going to visit it now, but if you’d like to see it, you can find it at number 13 Watson Road.

Places to stop along the way

Best time of day

Any time during daylight. On Friday afternoons from 4 pm, you'll be able to visit the Bluebird Garage market. Part of this tour takes you through the inner village of Muizenberg - there are some quirky shops in Palmer Road - please note they are open Mon to Sat morning only.

Precautions

Keep an eye on your belongings, and check the weather beforehand. Muizenberg can be rather windy.
