The Acropolis Museum
About
The Acropolis Museum opened in 2009 as a transparent building designed by Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi, who understood something the ancients already knew: Greek temples and statues were made to be seen in sunlight.

The top floor houses the Parthenon Gallery, intentionally tilted to align perfectly with the Parthenon itself, so visitors can look through glass and project the sculptures back onto the temple they once adorned.

Inside, you'll find five of the six original Caryatids from the Erechtheion, those enigmatic maidens dressed in ancient Athenian fashion whose thickly braided hair and garments have inspired neoclassical buildings from Chicago to Vienna. The museum also displays a 408 BCE financial record carved in stone that lists the Parthenon's construction expenses, revealing that only 20% of the Parthenon's workforce were slaves. The rest were chosen not for low cost but for superb craftsmanship.

VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours connect the museum to the monuments above, explaining how this transparent building reunites sculptures with their original architectural context.
