Cape Poınt

The Khoikhoi called it Hoerikwaggo, the Mountain in the Sea. Bartolomeu Dias named the cape for its storms, and a Portuguese king later renamed it Good Hope, an optimism that hundreds of shipwrecks have been testing ever since.

It's easy to give Cape Point an afternoon: the signpost photograph, a lunch with a view and a baboon with designs on the sandwich, then back to Cape Town before the wind turns, never asking why the bay behind them is called False.

VoiceMap's self-guided audio tours explain. Sailors heading home from the East mistook Cape Hangklip, across the bay, for this headland, and Cabo Falso – False Cape – gave the bay its name. The old lighthouse sat so high that fog swallowed its light, which is how a second one came to be built lower down. The Flying Dutchman is still said to be trying to round the point. As for that baboon, it'd likely rather be prising limpets off the rocks.
