Kenilworth Through the Eyes of a Child
About the Tour
This tour was created by students at Cedar House Prep School, as part of their school curriculum. What could possibly be of interest in a sleepy corner of suburban Cape Town? You may be surprised! Let a group of feisty middle-schoolers guide you through their neighbourhood. They’re keen to show you some of the hidden gems of this area while sharing some fascinating historical facts. Expect to see stately old villas, South Africa’s oldest horse racing track, two progressive schools and buildings designed by legendary architect Sir Herbert Baker. Take a relaxed stroll through the quiet streets of Lower Kenilworth and let the kids open your eyes to things you’ve never spotted before.

Cedar House Prep School
We are a group of Grade 6 and 7 students from Cedar House Prep School in Kenilworth, Cape Town. Our names are Hannah, Diadone, Mia, Paul, Keitu, Bay, Tom, Grace, Ella, Ben, Jenna-Mea, Matthew, Luca, Niamh, Maria, Kyran, Amrev, Sam, Joshua, Finn, Sebastian, Ella, Jamie, Daniel, Caitlin and Sino.
In a semester-long elective module called “Explore: Places Tell Stories”, we created VoiceMap audio tours in Cape Town with our teachers Hazel and Andreas. Along the way we learned things about the human and natural history of our hometown, the science of sound, oral history and technology.
We had loads of fun creating the tours and we hope you have fun experiencing them.

Directions to Starting Point
The tour starts on the pavement of Kenilworth Road just downhill (east) of the railway crossing next to Kenilworth Station in Kenilworth. On this side of the street there are two oak trees and houses behind a brown-red brick wall. Just ahead of you, as you face uphill and towards the mountain in the distance, there is small path that turns left off the pavement just before the railway crossing. On the opposite side of the road there is a large parking lot in front of several restaurants. You can get here quite easily using public transport. On the Cape Town to Simon’s Town railway line, disembark at Kenilworth Station. Nearby Main Road is well-serviced by MyCity busses – get off the bus near the intersection with Kenilworth Road and walk a few hundred meters down Kenilworth Road to the railway crossing. There is ample, guarded parking on the large parking lot on the opposite side of Kenilworth if you come in your own vehicle. This is a linear (i.e. not circular) walking tour, but we will give you directions back to the starting point once the audio tour has ended.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
Take a short snack break at The Tuck Shop or M Adams & Cos Trading Store, both of which are located in Putney Road. There is a great variety of eateries to choose from at the end of the tour, once you’re back at the starting point. We recommend Banana Jam Café in Second Avenue for craft beers and Caribbean food, Bardelli’s Restaurant on Kenilworth Road for pizza and pasta, Fat Harry’s for yummy burgers and Viva for Mexican specialities.
Best time of day
This tour can be done during any time of the day. To avoid busy traffic on the main thoroughfares, start between the morning and afternoon rush hours on weekdays (i.e. between around 9am and 4pm). Weekends are an excellent option at any time of day.
Precautions
The area you will be walking through is generally quiet and safe. Follow normal safety measures by keeping valuables out of sight and doing the tour in the company of others.
