The Washoe people called it Daʔaw – edge of the lake – and spent their summers here for more than 10,000 years before anyone else thought to name it. Then came the Donner Party, stranded in the Sierra snow in 1846; then the timber barons, who stripped the mountains bare to shore up the Nevada silver mines; then the casino operators, who drew a state line through the forest and built neon towers right on top of it.

None of that history is visible from a scenic overlook. It takes context to see Cave Rock – De ek wadapush to the Washoe – as more than a convenient boat launch, or to understand why Tallac's Victorian summer homes sit where they do. At 1,645 feet deep, the lake keeps its secrets.
