Up In The Clouds: A Guide to Heavenly Gondola’s Lake Tahoe Observation Deck
About the Tour
Lake Tahoe’s natural beauty is matched only by its rich history. On this tour, you’ll get to know the ‘Jewel of the Sierra’ on a captivating journey from the Heavenly Mountain Resort’s “Heavenly Gondola” ski lift, to the base of the Lake Tahoe Observation Deck.
As you climb to over 9,000 feet, I’ll share enchanting tales about this iconic alpine treasure. I’ll regale you with fascinating facts about Lake Tahoe, the surrounding basin, and its history, including the Gondola Fire of 2002.
But our journey is not just about the past. It’s about uncovering the little-known facts and untold stories that give Lake Tahoe its unique character. You’ll be captivated by the urban legend about Tahoe Tessie, the legendary creature that locals whisper about, who lives in the lake. You’ll also hear about mysteries that have puzzled historians for generations, and colorful tales of pioneers and prospectors who once roamed these rugged shores.
When you reach the summit, you’ll have an opportunity to soak in the panoramic views of Lake Tahoe’s deep blue waters, towering pines, and snow-capped peaks stretching as far as the eye can see. From this vantage point, you’ll gain a newfound appreciation for the majesty of Lake Tahoe.
When you get out of your gondola at the observation deck, you’ll also:
- Learn about the Sierra Nevada mountains and unique facts about Lake Tahoe, the third largest freshwater lake in the world
- Take in Desolation Wilderness, a federally protected reserve
- Be awestruck by tales of the Pacific Crest Trail which takes most hikers 5 months to complete
- Find out about the logging history on Lake Tahoe’s south shore, and the area’s aviation history
- See the iconic south shore mountain, Mt. Tallac
- Hear about the Hermit of Emerald Bay’s ghost and where you could expect to see him
- Listen to the history of steamer boats and elite lake resorts at the Tallac Historic site
- See Glenbrook where Mark Twain once resided before he moved to Virginia City, NV
- Listen to urban legends of Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe haunting Stateline Point
- Hear about the Emigrant Trail, formerly used by western pioneers and our local hero Snowshoe Thompson who braved these mountains to deliver mail between Placerville and Genoa
Throughout our 30-minute journey, I’ll share insider tips on the best hidden spots to explore around the lake, from secret coves to hiking trails and off-the-beaten-path attractions.
So plug in your earphones, sit back, relax, and let your imagination soar as we embark on this unforgettable aerial adventure above the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tahoe.

Directions to Starting Point
The tour begins at the Heavenly Gondola boarding station in the Heavenly Village near the south shore's Stateline. You will need to find parking and walk to the Gondola station. If you plan to hike at the top of the gondola, be sure to bring a backpack, proper hiking shoes, and water.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
If you plan to hike, I would encourage you to take the Tamarack chair up and hike to the top of Sky Chair. I also recommend hiking to the top of East Peak or up to Martin's Peak at the observation deck.
Enjoy your adventure. It is amazing up there!

Best time of day
The best time to go is around 9:00 AM in the summer or 10:00AM in the winter; the gondola closes at 4:00. You will need to head down the mountain by 3:30 PM.
Precautions
Parking can be an issue near the gondola. You can find 2 hour parking across the street, yet if you would like more time, then it would be best to park in the Heavenly Village parking garage or across the street at Mc P's.
If you plan to hike (which I highly recommend), be sure to wear proper shoes, bring water, and apply sunblock.
