Tram 28: A Time Traveller's Guide to Lisbon’s Historic Quarters
About the Tour
Hop aboard the iconic Tram 28, where Lisbon’s charm meets the thrill of time travel! On this tram tour, you’ll wind your way past landmark sites and scenic neighbourhoods on famous wooden carriages that date back to the 1930s – all while experiencing this affordable local mode of transport.
Your journey begins in Martim Moniz Square, the heart of multicultural Lisbon. As you head uphill towards the ancient Mouraria, Anjos, and Graça districts, you’ll have an opportunity to hop on and off the tram when you like, and learn about all the important attractions you’ll pass. You’ll hear stories about the siege of Castelo de São Jorge, pass the Cathedral Sé, and hear about the Roman Theatre where ancient gladiator competitions were held.
The tram will glide through the elegant Baixa district, where you’ll pass near Praça do Comércio and Arco da Rua Augusta, areas that were rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. You’ll also see the streets of Bica and Santos to São Bento, where you’ll hear about the Carnation Revolution. You’ll climb to the Estrela district to marvel at the grand Basilica of Estrela before reaching the charming neighbourhood of Campo de Ourique at the Prazeres Cemetery, where the tour ends.
Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:
- Stop for the famous Santa Justa elevator, a neo-Gothic iron lift that connects Lisbon’s lower Baixa district to the higher Chiado neighborhood, offering panoramic views of the city
- Wind through the labyrinthine streets of Alfama, Mouraria and Anjos, where the Moorish past comes alive and Fado’s soulful sounds echo through alleyways
- Experience Lisbon’s musical evolution through a curated playlist that pairs Mouraria’s Fado melodies with historical stories from each neighborhood, creating an immersive soundtrack
- Discover Lisbon’s most spectacular viewpoints (miradouros) including Senhora do Monte and Graça
- Explore the winding medieval streets of Alfama, with its Roman and Moorish heritage, and travel up to Chiado, the literary heart of Lisbon
- Rub elbows with poets and revolutionaries in Chiado, the city’s bohemian heart, where ideas sparked change
Get ready for a wild ride through Lisbon’s most exciting eras. This is time travel with a twist!
This 60-minute tour isn’t just about seeing the city; it’s about feeling its heartbeat through the stories, music, and history of its people.
