Castelo Branco

In 1938, Portugal's Estado Novo ran a contest to crown the country's most Portuguese village, and gave a silver rooster to a granite outcrop nobody outside Beira Baixa had heard of. It still gleams atop the Torre de Lucano - Monsanto earned its character long before anyone handed it a title.

Houses here don't sit on boulders; they're built between them, under them, sometimes roofed by granite slabs that predate every king who taxed the place. Past the Solar dos Priores, this feels less like a village than a hillside that agreed, reluctantly, to become one.

Most day-trippers manage the cobbled streets, photograph the rooster, and turn back before the steep climb to the castle - missing the Thirteen Bowls legend and the 1814 blast that flattened Monsanto's Templar walls.
