Zwolle's tallest tower wears its nickname before its name: locals call it the Peperbus, the pepper pot, for its stubby shape over the old moat - a modest emblem for a city that produced one of history's most translated books without raising its voice about it.

That book was written a few streets from here by the monk Thomas a Kempis, whose Imitation of Christ still ranks among the most reprinted texts after the Bible - a quiet Hanseatic town exporting bestsellers while nobody outside the Low Countries noticed.
