About the Tour

Discover the depth of Nuremberg‘s history, extending far beyond its well-known trials, on this walking tour through the seldom-seen side of the city. Nuremberg has a vast medley of architecture that lines every street, reflecting the chapters in its medieval, Renaissance, post-war and modern history. On this walking tour, we‘ll discover its history, art, culture, and everyday life in these ancient streets, and trace its journey to becoming one of Germany‘s most historical cities.

Starting in the Main Market Square, we‘ll walk up the hill through the northern part of the old city to the imposing Imperial Castle of Nuremberg. On the way, you‘ll pass St. Sebald Church and hear the legend of St. Sebald and the miracles he performed. After taking in the impressive castle and the breathtaking vistas around it, you‘ll walk back down the hill, this time passing the old mansion of Albrecht Durer, Germany‘s most famous Renaissance artist. I‘ll also send you on a stroll along the River Pegnitz, with its picturesque scenery and ancient bridges. The tour ends in front of Schöner Brunnen (Beautiful Fountain), where you can make a wish upon the gold ring attached to the fence around the fountain.

Along the way, you‘ll have a chance to:

  • See where Christkindlesmarkt, the annual Christmas market, is held in the Main Market Square
  • Taste Nuremberg‘s famous sausages and find out why there was a sausage law passed in 1313
  • Cross the Fleischbrücke and learn about the bridge’s former role in the meat trade
  • Try Lebkuchen, Nuremberg‘s renowned gingerbread
  • Drink a red beer at Germany‘s first organic brewery, Hausbrauerei Altstadthof
  • Enjoy the beautiful squares of Tiergartnertorplatz or Weinmarkt
  • Visit the museum at the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg and hear a famous love story on the hill
  • Gaze into St. Sebald church with its brass tomb of St. Sebald‘s relics
  • Pass Hotel Elch, the oldest in Nuremberg, and admire its striking timber-framed exterior

By the end of this 60-minute tour of Nuremberg, you‘ll have a greater appreciation for the city, its rich cultural heritage and lesser-known stories.
