Everyone's heard of the monster in the loch a few miles south, even without placing Inverness on a map – the city calls itself Capital of the Highlands, but for centuries it's been more gateway than capital, the crossing point where Highland and Lowland Scotland eyed each other across the Ness.

That in-between status shows everywhere. The tartans, the bagpipes, the pageantry that greets you off the train – much of it was stitched together as tradition long after the clans it honours had scattered.
