Culloden Battlefield Tour: Walk in the Footsteps of the Jacobites
About the Tour
Explore one of Scotland’s most historic and iconic sites, Culloden Battlefield, where the last pitched battle on British soil took place in 1746. On this walking tour, I’ll dive into its history and debunk a few of the myths that surround the battle that changed the Scottish Highlands forever.
I spent a lot of time on this battlefield when I was training to become a professional guide, but, to this day, every time I walk around the moor I feel moved by its history. Even when the Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Centre is closed, with me in your ear, you’ll be able to relive the history of the Battle of Culloden and walk away with a greater insight into this important event. On this hour-long Culloden Battlefield tour, you can expect to:
- Learn about Bonnie Prince Charlie, his Jacobite army, and their opponents, Britain’s government forces, while listening to an easy-to-follow overview of the battle
- Explore key locations on the battlefield where stories about Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) and the Highland Clans who fought for him live on
- Stand at the Memorial Cairn and wander amongst the Clan Stones to remember the thousands of fallen soldiers that lost their lives in the battle and the bloody aftermath
- Discover the brutality of warfare medicine while passing by Leanach Cottage
- Hear about the dreadful events that unfolded after the battle
Join me on this moving walk and find out why the Battle of Culloden remains so significant today.

The tour begins in the pay and display parking area outside the National Trust for Scotland Visitor Centre. The parking fees are reinvested and help towards the conservation of the battlefield.
If you are visiting outside the normal visitor centre opening hours the car park barrier will be locked - there are a small number of parking spaces between the barrier and the main road that can be used when the centre is closed.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
If you have time, visit the excellent National Trust for Scotland Visitor Centre at the conclusion of your audio tour. There is an exhibition area (entry fee) that goes into greater detail about the events you discover on the battlefield and includes many artifacts, including weapons from the battle. There is a cafe selling sandwiches, cakes, and light lunches and a neighbouring gift shop. Toilet facilities are available free of charge in the visitor centre.
Best time of day
From dawn to dusk. You can take the audio tour even when the National Trust for Scotland Visitor Centre is closed as there is open access to the battlefield at all times. Early morning and early evening are good times to visit when there are no coach tours.
Precautions
The tour uses well-made paths across the battlefield that can be uneven in places, so wear suitable walking shoes. Be prepared to be standing or walking for around an hour as there are only a few places to sit. This moorland has no shelter so make sure you have waterproof clothing to wear in case of wet weather.
