Hersonıssos

Hersonissos means peninsula, and the name appears on coins the city minted for itself when it was an independent port with its own government. Visitors tend to meet a later version: the boulevard, the harbour, the little white church out on its rock, a town that's lively and easy and built around the beach.

Under that version sits an older one. The pleasure port is laid over a Roman harbour, and if you peer into the clear water by the promenade you can still pick out what's left of it, while a pyramid-shaped fountain with a mosaic of a scene at sea survives on the boulevard itself. Earthquakes and pirate raids emptied the city by the seventh century, and the resort that stands here now is the second go.
