Introducing our Lasithi tours
Zeus was born here – or so the Lasithi Plateau insists, though a rival cave on Mount Ida says the same. In the myth, Rhea hid her newborn in the Dikti mountains, where warriors clashed shields to drown out his cries before his father could find and swallow him.
The plateau has been keeping secrets ever since. Ringed by peaks and hidden from the coast, its bowl of orchards and fields was emptied by the Venetians, who banned farming here on pain of amputation, then reopened it when their granaries ran low. Later came thousands of white-sailed windmills, though many visitors see only the cave before winding back down to the beaches.
VoiceMap’s self-guided audio drive climbs from the coast and brings that cave to life, but it also lingers nearby: in Krasi, where villagers have washed clothes beneath an ancient plane tree for a century, and at Kera Kardiotissa monastery, whose chain is said to have held a runaway icon. Stop for raki whenever the mood takes you, and the story picks up where you left off.
Turn the key, take the hairpins slowly and let the plateau give up its secrets.
