The treasures of Knossos unveiled: from Hersonissos through Archanes' vineyards
About the Tour
Crete is home to Knossos, the largest archaeological site on the island, believed to be Europe’s oldest city. On this scenic driving tour from just outside bustling Hersonissos to Knossos, via Archanes, I’ll share the history and culture of the areas you pass through, along with some insights into life in Crete today.
You’ll hear the story of how – in 1878, when Crete was still under Turkish occupation – the wealthy art lover Minos Kalokairinos discovered parts of Knossos’ west wing, and unearthed many pithoi vases. You’ll also find out how, after enlisting the help of the archaeologist Arthur Evans, a 35 year-long large-scale excavation followed and, with it, evidence of a Minoan civilization emerged. This work would forever change the face of Crete, and play a major part in the rise of tourism.
On this driving tour through Crete and its vineyards, you’ll also have the opportunity to:
- Visit the town of Archanes, an important Minoan settlement where recent excavations have revealed its rich and fascinating history
- Explore Knossos, the oldest Neolithic site on Crete where the first indication of human activity on the island can be traced
- Learn about Knossos Palace, a monumental symbol of the Minoan civilization, where the 34 cm tall statue of the Snake Goddess was found
- Stop in Myrtia, where the village square houses the Nikos Kazantzakis Museum, built for the acclaimed author of Zorba the Greek, who identified himself first as Cretan and, second, Greek
- Admire the many thousands of local fish species at CRETAquarium Thalassokosmos, an underwater display built on the site of the former American air force base
- Get a taste of traditional Cretan winemaking at the Wine Museum of the Union of Crete, and see the oldest Minoan wine press at Vathypetro, south of Mount Jouchtas, where the contours of Zeus’ face shape the mountain
- Find out about the pattern that paintings in Greek Orthodox churches usual follow in the village of Episkopi
- Hear a few of the 250 different Cretan musical instruments on display at the Labyrinth Musical Workshop, founded by the English musician Ross Daly in 1982
During this four-hour driving tour, you’ll have the option of exploring the town square of Archanes on foot, or making a day of it by lingering at any of the stops en route. The tour ends at Karteros, where you can enjoy its wonderful sandy beaches, or watch the sunset with the low-flying airplanes from Heraklion Airport overhead. Or you may wish to return to Hersonissos to discover the ancient history of this seaside resort in your own time.

Mr. Routaki
Bio of AJ alias Mr. Routaki:
Since 1995 I have been coming to Crete. An island that has stolen my heart. The Samaria Gorge was my very first working area and in the following seasons many more regions followed in a wide variety of professions.
And always surrounded by friendly guests who had all kinds of questions. That is why the Routaki routes also provide the information desired by you as a guest of the island.
After completing my tourism education (M.T.R.O.) I found the right activities in this wonderful profession.
Guide, tour leader, resort host, underwater-cameraman, restaurant owner, Jeep safari guide or sailing (flotilla) leader. All these experiences I use nowadays when compiling my information and stories which I incorporate into my car routes and city walks.
Daily life on Crete interwoven with the stories of the many acquaintances I have been able to listen to over the past thirty years.
The first routes were created in 2006 using CDs (and even cassette tapes!!). Parts of routes from back then have now, with the help of the VoiceMap app, grown into a beautiful portfolio of day trips in the three languages I master; Dutch, English and German.
The Infotheek on my Routaki.com website will continue to grow and many more routes and walks will follow.
Some of my goals are to apply augmented reality and to show you the traditions of the olive harvest or wedding ceremonies even outside the usual periods.
I continue to immerse myself in the Cretan culture traditions and customs. I read about recent developments and combine this for you into a wonderful holiday day experience.
Through the many ‘interest media’ I am happy to keep you informed.

Directions to Starting Point
The route begins at the parking area of the Lidl supermarket, situated just outside the bustling tourist area of Hersonissos. The supermarket is positioned to the west of Hersonissos, along the old road leading toward Analipsi, Gouves, and Kokkini Hani.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
The Nikos Kazantzakis museum and the kafeneon next door in Myrtia, the Union’s Wine Museum in Peza, the Labyrinth Musical Workshop in Houdetsi. Tavern Spitiko on the town square of Archanes, Minoan excavations site of Knossos and the sandy beaches of Karteros and Amnisos.
Best time of day
The route can be completed throughout the year (if there was no extensive rainfall) and is designed to span a day. The actual driving time is approximately 4 hours, but there are numerous opportunities to explore or enjoy pleasant breaks. Please be aware that the conclusion of the tour is approximately half an hour from the starting point when using the New National Road.
Precautions
The final stretch of the route after Knossos takes you through the olive fields on a narrow single-lane road. Therefore, it's essential to drive slowly and attentively, leaving ample space for oncoming vehicles. If this feels too challenging, one can opt to drive into Heraklion and use the standard roads to return to the accommodation.
Tips: Bring along a smartphone battery charger, Maintain an average speed of 55-60 km/h, Wear appropriate clothing for churches and monasteries, Purchase the correct language version of the route (Dutch or English), Ensure that the route is NOT set to the audiobook setting, Disable automatic screen turn-off (don't forget to turn it back on afterward), If you have one, bring a smartphone holder (they were for sale at Lidl at the time of test driving this route).
