Bram Stoker climbed all 199 steps to Whitby Abbey in 1890, and the ruined nave he found there gave the world Dracula. Every year since, black-clad pilgrims follow him up, phones out for the same gothic silhouette against the sky.
Whitby was strange long before Stoker arrived. Locals once swore the cliffs crawled with serpents that St Hilda turned to stone - ammonites, really, though the legend outlived the explanation for centuries. Those cliffs also yield jet, the black gemstone Queen Victoria wore into mourning, and down at the harbour Captain Cook learned his trade on colliers built in these yards, a century before any count set foot here.
