Tomar’s Historical Highlights: A Guide to Portugal’s Knights Templar Town
About the Tour
Tomar’s history extends far beyond its famous Templar connections. On this walking tour, you’ll discover how this medieval fortress town became a center of exploration, Jewish scholarship, and cultural traditions that continue today.
Starting in front of the Church Santa Maria do Olival, where Templar masters lie buried, you’ll follow the peaceful Nabão River through neighborhoods where centuries of Portuguese life have unfolded. You’ll hear about the Age of Discovery and several colourful Portuguese festivals as you stroll past traditional pastry shops serving sweets found nowhere else.
You’ll weave through the historic Jewish Quarter with its remarkably preserved medieval synagogue, and beside waterways that once powered mills for the powerful religious orders. Along the way, you’ll find out how Jewish, Christian, and Moorish influences shaped the town’s identity. The tour ends in the historical Largo do Pelourinho, a square that once served as the town’s center of justice.
On this 90-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Hear about Gualdim Pais who founded Tomar in 1160 and find out how Prince Henry the Navigator funded his maritime expeditions
- Walk through Casa dos Cubos, a 16th-century granary transformed into a modern cultural center
- Decode the stunning azulejo tile panels depicting women carrying towering bread trays
- Visit one of Portugal’s best-preserved medieval synagogues, rediscovered in the 1900s
- Learn about the forced conversion of Jews in 1496 and its impact on Portuguese society
- Stand in Praça da República where Templar knights once gathered and modern festivals are still celebrated
- Stroll through Parque do Mouchão’s tranquil gardens with views of the Convent of Christ on the hilltop
By the end of this tour, you’ll have experienced Tomar as both a medieval Templar stronghold and a lively Portuguese town where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with contemporary life.

GO! Walks Portugal
Hi! My name is Sara Cruz, and I live in Coimbra, a charming city in central Portugal that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013.
I hold a degree in Tourism, Leisure and Heritage from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Coimbra, the oldest university in Portugal, founded in 1290. I also completed a postgraduate degree in Musicology, specializing in Portuguese guitar, with a particular focus on its morphology and soundscapes.
In 2012, I founded GO! Walks Portugal with the aim of sharing the rich cultural heritage of my city and region. I began by creating themed walking tours in Coimbra, and by 2015, I had expanded to other parts of the country - especially across Central Portugal, home to some of my favorite monuments and many off-the-beaten-path villages that remain untouched by mass tourism and preserve some of the most important cultural legacies of Portugal.
I speak Portuguese, English, and Spanish fluently, and I truly enjoy welcoming people and showing them the very best my country has to offer. Organizing unique cultural experiences is a big part of why I started working with tourism, and creating these audio tours has been a wonderful challenge that I embraced with heart and soul. I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I do!

Directions to Starting Point
The starting point is in front of the Church of Santa Maria do Olival, known to be the Knights Templar Church of Tomar.
If you are driving and getting to Tomar by car, this is the perfect place to start because you'll find free parking spaces all around this area!
If you happen to arrive in town by train or bus, it isn't far from the stations: just about a 10 minutes walk!
Tips
Places to stop along the way
There are many restaurants and pastry shops along the way. I will comment about that as we go, so if you want to stop for a meal it will be possible.
Best time of day
The best time to do this tour is between 10am and 5pm, because the monuments and museums will most likely be open! But you can do it anytime, day or evening, rain or shine!
Precautions
Tomar is a very safe town but don't make things easy: keep your wallet close to you at all times. If you drove here, don't leave anyting visible inside the car (put it in the trunk before getting to your parking spot, and never after parking!).
You should definitely bring comfortable clothes and shoes with you at all times. Sunscreen and a hat/sunglasses... or an umbrella and raincoat if it threatens to rain!
