How Henry Flagler Created Florida: A Guide to St. Augustine in the Gilded Age
About the Tour
The Gilded Age was the time when America became America, the envy of the entire world. Accumulation of massive wealth created the brass ring everyone would long to grasp. This was on full display in St. Augustine as it became the winter destination for the richest and most powerful of this era. On this walking tour, you’ll discover how an industrialist from New York named Henry Flagler saw the potential of this small town – which had become known as a refuge for sickly individuals seeking milder climates – and turned it into the place to be. We’ll retrace Flagler’s steps and find out how he catapulted this quaint colonial town into the cradle of Florida tourism.
Starting outside Potter’s Wax Museum, you’ll make your way to Cordova Street, where I’ll tell you how Florida state encouraged wealthy businessmen to build railway lines. At the humble but important Flagler Cottage, you’ll find out about the building’s crucial role in establishing and maintaining Henry’s empire. At Ponce de Leon Hotel, I’ll show you the Flagler monument where the man who built Florida is immortalized.
On your journey, you’ll:
- Walk the same streets as legends like Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, and Mellon, in what was once the power center for the giants of the Gilded Age
- Stroll through the unique Flagler College and learn about its origins
- See the awesome religious centers of the era, including Grace United Methodist Church and Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church
- Bear witness to how Mr. Flagler envisioned Florida to become the American Riviera, and find out what steps he took to launch his plan in the nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine
- Find out just why St. Augustine has remained a European-style city in the middle of American development at today's Villa Zorayda Museum, with its Moorish architecture
- See how Flagler rivals attempted to capitalize on the whirlwind development of 1880s St. Augustine with the construction of the immense Casa Monica Hotel See the overwhelming Hotel Ponce de Leon, the spark that would ignite Florida’s tourism future, and the most luxurious hotel in the world at the time of its construction, as well as its sister the Hotel Alcazar
By the end of this 45-minute walk, you’ll understand the power of one man’s vision, and his will to create a culture that would define his legacy for generations to come. Henry Flagler was the man who built Florida.

Hello everyone! To describe me, well it's a somewhat simple process, I am a history nut! Growing up in the shadow of the oldest city in the country, St. Augustine, Florida, has ingrained a passion for history in my soul. The lives of those who shaped the future hold a fascination for me.
I was born in Winchester, Tennessee and moved with my family to East Palatka, Florida as a young boy. Here, being around historic locations is just part of life. From playing on the grounds of the oldest stone fortress in the US, to fishing in the shadow of an ancient Spanish stone outpost, people here are spoiled with our exposure to history.
My father introduced me to the business of history in St. Augustine some time ago. This led to my wife and I creating our own tour company, Spyglass Travel. We turned our passion into our careers. My wife Angie is as passionate about history as me.
History contains all the lessons we could ever need to deal with issues of today. Know your history and you can handle anything! Thank you for sharing my passion with me.

Directions to Starting Point
The tour begins on the corner of Orange and Cordova streets at the entrance to the Potter's Wax Museum, standing in front of a seated statue of Henry Flagler.
The best place to park for this journey is the Historic City Parking Garage at 1 Cordova Street. It is the closest public parking to the tour, mostly covered (except for the top 4th floor) and security patrolled. By the way, as you exit the parking garage the Visitors Information Center, directly in front of the garage, is a great place to pick a water for your walk or visit the restroom facilities.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
On the tour are several places to visit. The Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church is only open to visitors on Fridays between 11am and 3:30pm. Admission is free for this self-guided experience. Also the Villa Zorayda Museum and Lightner Museums offer outstanding experiences to complement this tour. The tour inside Flagler College (the old Hotel Ponce de Leon) is highly recommended. Tickets are available for these tours at www.flaglerlegacy.com, these tend to sell out, so get tickets in advance.
Best time of day
Prime times for the tour would be morning from 8-10 am or afternoon 4-6 pm. Florida weather is usually warm, and these allow you to avoid the heat of the day.
Precautions
I recommend this tour during the day, most of the architecture is best viewed in daylight. This is Florida, so prepare for the sun, sunblock is recommended, as is a cool bottle of water. Also, sudden showers are always a threat, check the weather and plan accordingly. The city is very safe, but much of the tour will be through an active college campus, so just be prepared to see many college students.
