Rotterdam in a Day: A Guide to its Art, History and Architecture
About the Tour
Rotterdam is unlike any other Dutch city. Instead of narrow canals and medieval gabled houses, you’ll find striking architecture and a spirit of reinvention. On this walking tour, you’ll hear how a former fishing village became Europe’s largest port and a showcase of modern urban design.
Starting at the Stadhuis (City Hall), one of the few buildings to survive the devastating 1940 bombing, you’ll stroll through the rebuilt city center. As you walk, you’ll see bold and revolutionary architecture like the world-famous Kubuswoningen (Cube Houses) and the stunning, iridescent Markthal (Market Hall), dubbed the “Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam.” You’ll pass hidden maritime areas, vibrant cultural districts, and the Maas River, which connects Rotterdam to the world’s trading networks.
As you walk, you’ll see everything from Europe’s first city surf pool, complete with artificial waves, to St Lawrence Church, which has become a symbol of resilience. The tour ends at the controversial Santa Claus sculpture by Paul McCarthy, a fitting symbol of Rotterdam’s willingness to embrace bold, conversation-starting art.
On this two-hour tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Take in the iconic yellow Cube Houses designed by Piet Blom, in what feels like an urban residential village
- Walk through the historic Old Harbor where 17th-century ships rest beneath modern skyscrapers
- Understand why locals say “Niet lullen, maar poetsen” (don’t talk, just get on with it)
- Discover the silver egg-shaped Boijmans Van Beuningen Depot, the world’s first publicly accessible art storage facility
- Learn about Rotterdam’s WWII bombing and the remarkable post-war reconstruction that created today’s modern cityscape
- Stroll along the Maas River promenade with views of the iconic Erasmus Bridge, nicknamed ”The Swan”
- Explore vibrant Witte de Withstraat, the former newspaper district, now Rotterdam’s creative and nightlife hub
By the end of this two-hour tour, you’ll have experienced the Netherlands’ most modern city, where resilience meets innovation in Europe’s gateway to the world.

Nadine
Hi, I'm Nadine. Originally from Germany, I have been living in the Netherlands for almost ten years now. My experience of both cultures allows me to show you Rotterdam through a local's eyes while still remembering what it's like to come to the Netherlands for the first time. I hope that my tours will help you to discover this tiny yet innovative and charming country and its wonderfully open and direct people - just as I did when I first moved here. Come discover Rotterdam with me!

Tips
Places to stop along the way
I always let you know on the tour when we pass a popular area where you could take a small break. For example at:
• The Markthal with food stands from cuisines all over the world
• The Oude Haven
• Witte de Withstraat
Two of my favorite places are:
• Savor&Nosh
• Bistro Bros
Worth a visit:
• Kijk Kubus Museum House - visit one of the iconic Cube Houses from the inside for only a few euros! The visit only takes a few minutes and is perfect to combine with the tour.
• Boijmans Van Beuningen Depot - visit the world's first art depot that is open to public!
Best time of day
Rotterdam can be visited all year long!
If you want to escape the crowds, do the tour on a weekday or during the morning on the weekend.
But also on Saturdays and Sundays, crowds are still doable in Rotterdam. The tour makes sure you visit both popular areas as well as more hidden ones so you can relax for a while after seeing the major sights, such as the Markthal and Cube Houses.
If you would like to see the Markthal from the inside during your visit, do the tour between 10am and 8m or on Sundays between 12pm and 6pm.
Precautions
When crossing streets, always use the zebra crossings as indicated during the tour.
Be aware of trams and bikes passing by.
If you visit in autumn or winter, bringing an umbrella with you is always a good idea in Holland! :-)
