Historical Delfshaven Walking Tour: A Guide to Rotterdam’s Old Town
About the Tour
Charming Delfshaven is one of Rotterdam’s most picturesque and historic neighborhoods. This walking tour will take you back in time to explore the well-preserved canals and historic buildings, while you hear the fascinating stories that make this a unique destination.
The tour begins at the Delfshaven Metro, where past and present meet. You’ll explore Rotterdam’s history during World War II and bear witness to some of the scars of the conflict. As you walk along the cobblestone streets, you’ll experience the essence of old-world Rotterdam in this peaceful harbor, surrounded by charming canals and traditional Dutch gabled houses. I’ll tell you about its rich past and connection to the English pilgrims escaping religious persecution.
At the end of our tour, you’ll return to the first bridge you visited for a spectacular view of the entire harbor of Delfshaven.
Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:
- Visit the Pilgrim Fathers’ Church while learning about their journey to the New World
- Dive into the fascinating life of Piet Heyn, the Dutch admiral known for capturing the Spanish silver fleet
- Enjoy scenic views at two bridges, Mouterbrug and Piet Heynsbrug
- Spot the popular “Locks of Love” seat, with a view of the Euromast observation tower, the second tallest in Rotterdam
- Hear about Delfshaven’s relationship to the city of Delft and Rotterdam
- Pass Zakkendragershuisje, the historic guild house where porters once gathered to carry heavy sacks of grain, offering a glimpse into the everyday life of Delfshaven’s past
- See the windmill Korenmolen de Distilleerketel, a classic symbol of Dutch heritage, and hear about its use for distillery factories
- Learn about the restored grain warehouse building from 1825 which houses the Dutch Pinball Museum today, and the brewery Stadsbrouwerij de Pelgrim in the former Delfshaven Town Hall
Join me on this 60-minute walk through Delfshaven, where history comes alive, offering a unique glimpse into Rotterdam’s past. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking to enjoy a scenic walk through one of the city’s most beautiful areas, this tour will leave you with a memorable experience.

Hi, I'm Nadine. Originally from Germany, I have been living in the Netherlands for almost ten years now. My experience of both cultures allows me to show you Rotterdam through a local's eyes while still remembering what it's like to come to the Netherlands for the first time. I hope that my tours will help you to discover this tiny yet innovative and charming country and its wonderfully open and direct people - just as I did when I first moved here. Come discover Rotterdam with me!

Best time of day
Delfshaven can be visited all year long!
If you want to visit Delfshaven in complete calm and silence, you can go on a Monday or Tuesday. But be aware that many cafés and restaurants are closed on these days.
From Wednesday on, many cafés and restaurants open and the area is coming to live without being crowded by any means.
Even on weekends Delfshaven is far less crowded than Rotterdam city. So it is a good way to escape the crowds around the Markthall and Cubus houses.
If you want to include the Dutch Pinball Museum in your visit to Delfshaven, I recommend you to go on Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday.
The Pilgrim Fathers Church can be visited on Fridays and Saturdays.
Precautions
Be prepared for Dutch weather. Especially if you are visiting in autumn or winter take an umbrella with you.
