Poland, as Poznań tells it, began here: Mieszko I was very probably baptised on Cathedral Island in 966, and nine of the country's first rulers lie in the cathedral. The city carries this lightly. One of its symbols is a pair of mechanical billy goats, the koziołki, who butt heads on the town hall tower every day at noon.
Roughly halfway between Berlin and Warsaw, Poznań is easy to treat as a stop: the goats, a plate of pierogi in the Old Market Square, and on to the next capital.
