Frederick the Great named his retreat Sanssouci - without a care – and built a gilded palace on terraced vineyards to prove it, a pleasure garden meant to outrun Berlin's noise, just half an hour down the road.

Yet this same unhurried city once held the shape of postwar Europe in its hands. In 1945, Allied leaders met at Cecilienhof to decide how a broken Germany, and the world after it, would be carved up. Potsdam still carries that tension: built for lightness, forever weighed down by consequence.
