About the Tour

Discover Munich with me, a real "Münchner Kindl”. On this tour through the city centre, we’ll see highlights from over eight centuries of history. I’ll share some insights and introduce you to important characters from Munich’s past. I’ll also point out a few spots where you can enjoy local beer and other Bavarian delicacies.

We’ll begin our walk in the iconic Marienplatz. From there, we’ll explore the streets. There’s delicious food at the Viktualienmarkt along the way, as well as the grandeur of St Peter’s Church and other impressive sights. I look forward to helping you see Munich because as German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe put it, “you only see what you know!”

Here are a few of the highlights you can look forward to on this tour:

  • Why is there a pretzel in a church fresco?
  • Discovering which streets were once moats
  • Why is there a monkey tower in Munich?
  • The story behind the devil's footprint in the Cathedral
  • Where does the name Munich come from?
  • Find out who Orlando di Lasso was
  • What is so special about the Bavarian beer gardens?

Munich has so much to offer. Let’s dive in together and uncover all there is to see!

Tour Producer

Hi, I was born in Munich and have spent most of my life in this beautiful city. As a teenager I had the chance to live and go to highschool in California for two years, that's why I love the English language. After having taught Englisch to toddlers when my kids were young, I decided to raise the teaching to a new level and become a trained tourguide. For 15 years now I work as a professional tour guide in Munich and Bavaria and I would love to show you the highlights in my hometown! During Covid when tours were not an option I came across VoiceMap - which literally saved me back then as I could work out my first tour online. As a licensed guide in the Dachau Memorial I can also give you profound background about the Nazi dictatorship that started right here in Munich. My main interests are Bavarian history with the monarchy that shaped Munich and Bavaria for centuries and also the dramatic changes of the 20th century plus my love for food and wine.

Alter Hof

Let's stop in here for a moment, facing the tower.

This courtyard is the so called Alter Hof or Old Courthouse as this is where the dukes resided since 1253. At least that is the oldest written statement we have about this location, it might be even older. The wings ahead ...

Getting There

Route Overview

VoiceMap tours follow a route from a set starting point. It’s how we give turn-by-turn directions and tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.
  1. Total distance
    3km
  2. Distance back to start location
    95.6m

Directions to Starting Point

Start: Marienplatz, 80331 München

Once you are at Marienplatz, find the column in the centre with the golden statue on top, this is where our tour starts.

As Munich's city centre is car free, it is best to use public transport to get to MARIENPLATZ. This is Munich's central square and you can get here by metro lines U3 or U6 and all S-Bahn trains as well. Taxis can drop you off at the old town hall (Altes Rathaus). If you arrive by car, it's best to park in one of the parking garages nearby (try Oberanger or Hofbrauhaus, they are the closest).

Tips

Places to stop along the way

During the tour you can choose to visit some of the churches also inside to admire the artwork. Entrance is free. The tower of St.Peter's church also can be climbed for a wonderful view. And you can stop at the beer garden in the food market for lunch or have a drink at the famous Hofbrauhaus beer hall.
For beer enthusiasts I can also recommend the Bier- and Oktoberfest Museum with a little pub.

Best time of day

This tour can be taken any time during the day. If you prefer it to be quieter, start early in the morning before the shops open around 10. Also on Sundays it is quiet as all shops remain closed on Sundays. However, please note that on Sundays the food market also is closed.
You might also want to consider to start the tour at 11 or 12 noon - then you can listen to the sound of bells from the Glockenspiel at the beginning of our tour.

Precautions

Munich in general is a very safe city. But of course always keep your purse/wallet close to your body.

“Great app. walk around at your own pace, stop where you want, move on or speed up when you want. Read the script before you go or during the commentary, speed it up or replay it. Repeat the tour whenever you like.”
