Mackinac Island Tour: A Scenic Circular Cycle
About the Tour
Mackinac Island has been called the queen of the Great Lakes for centuries. On this cycling tour, you’ll see just how true that is – and always has been. Starting on the fringe of Marquette Park, you’ll circumnavigate the island, sticking to a highway where cars are completely banned.
As you take in the island’s beauty at your own pace, you’ll delve into its history, from quite recent to ancient, and everything in between. You’ll find out how a single woman took on the powerful John Jacob Astor fur empire, how Fort Mackinac played a big role in the American Revolution, and how the War of 1812 forced the Americans out of the fort.
This tour isn’t all history. You’ll see big geologic wonders like Arch Rock, and little ones, too, like the Devil’s Kitchen cave. We’ll take you to a hidden gem on a tiny nature trail, and let you in on a dirty little secret about the wonderfully clear water surrounding the Island. You’ll also get to know who lies buried beneath the altar at St Anne’s church (and why), and learn about the most important subject on the Island: who makes the best fudge.
Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:
- Whizz past Marquette Park while learning the unique history of its famous lilac bushes
- Hear the early history of the island’s 17th-century fort
- Find out about Madame La Framboise, a woman of Ojibwe and French descent
- Discover the multi-layered, sometimes crazy history of Mission Point, including its dangerous ski lift and connection to the Moral Re-Armament Group
- Enjoy lunch at Cannonball Oasis, a restaurant near the “back” (or north end) of the Island and discover why the British landed here at the start of the War of 1812
- Discover the best parts of downtown, including where to eat everything from fancy dining to bag lunches, and the island’s best bookstore
By the time you’ve finished this circular 120-minute tour, you’ll have a greater appreciation for the history of the island and its people. And you’ll probably feel like you want to see more of the island, either with another one of our tours or on your own.
Tour Producer
Welcome to Mackinac Island! I'm Mark Bearss and my wife, Mary Jane Barnwell and I met on Mackinac Island in the 1980's. We have a home here, and Mary Jane runs Island Bookstore, while I'm happily retired. We put together this tour to introduce some of the many aspects of our favorite place. Hopefully these tours will give you a greater appreciation for so many of Mackinac Island's wonderful qualities while you stretch your legs and take in its beauty.

Precautions
Always try to keep to the right side of the road. If you are turning, use hand and/or voice signals. Always check behind you as you turn so you don't hit someone coming from behind you. Keep your head up, and focus on the bike, foot and horse traffic. As you listen to the tour, you should pull over to the right side of the road, stop your bike and listen to the tour information for the 2 or 3 minutes it takes to take in the info, then move on. You'll be a lot less likely cause a bike accident if you do just stop for a few minutes while listening to the tour. And if you do see something you'd like take a closer look at, it's a good idea to pull over to the right and stop. You can stop this tour anytime you'd like, and start it up again when you're ready.
