Mackinac Island banned automobiles in 1898 and never let them back. The only traffic today is hooves, bicycle bells, and the occasional golf cart - which is why Universal Studios shot Somewhere in Time here without changing a thing. The island already looked like 1912.

But frozen in time became the pitch, and pitches attract crowds. On summer afternoons, Main Street fills with day-trippers locals call fudgies, drawn in by the candy shops and gone by the last ferry, having seen the fort, bought the fudge, and missed almost everything else.
