About the Tour

This whistle-stop audio tour uses the perfect mode of transport for sightseeing: Dubai’s driverless metro. It’s one of four available on the city’s elevated railway, and one of two that starts at the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station.

This particular Metro Moments tour takes you into what locals call New Dubai, where you’ll see examples of the city’s ambitious growth from the comfort of your air-conditioned carriage. You’ll be amazed by the incredible skyline, the feats of architecture and engineering, and the many marvels of modern Dubai.

There are thriving hubs of business and economy too, and you’ll find out about the multinationals and disruptive startups that make this the region’s commercial centre. You’ll end your journey at DMCC Metro Station, which was named after the nearby Dubai Multi-Commodities Centre, one of world’s largest markets for physical gold and diamonds.

Just behind Times Square Centre is Alserkal Avenue, one of the region’s most important art hubs. It used to be a group of 20 converted warehouses, but its galleries and studios now cover over 500,000 square feet, if you also count the offices of other businesses in the creative industry here. Alerskal Avenue has a number of residencies, and there are regular seminars and exhibitions by its rotating group of artists. There are more spontaneous, pop-up events too, like jam sessions and experimental performance art.

Alserkal Avenue used to be an industrial area near the outskirts of the city. But that feels like a long time ago now, because Dubai is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Its population has increased by 1,000 percent in 40 years! And if that doesn’t impress you, consider this: a little over 40 years ago, in 1975, the size of urban Dubai was 54 square kilometres. By 2015, it was 977 square kilometres.

Tourism has grown just as quickly. Almost 16 million people visited Dubai in 2017, and by 2020, the city plans to increase that number to 20 million.

We’re coming into First Abu Dhabi Bank Station now. The Gold and Diamond Park is a short walk from here. Deira’s Gold Souk may be great for a bit of playful haggling and the atmosphere of its bustling, perfume-scented alleyways, but the Gold and Diamond Park is where you should come if you’re after some serious shopping – or just some air-conditioning.

It has long rows of vendors who can turn around bespoke jewellery in record time. Or you could just get your name in Arabic engraved onto a necklace. Whatever you do, be sure to shop around.

This neighbourhood is also a popular place to buy luxury cars. You’ll find a lot of them on Dubai’s roads, but its sometimes their license plates that are really showing off – especially if they’re just a single digit.
