Space Tourist Amsterdam: Explore the City’s Cosmic Side by Public Transport
About the Tour
Space is often shrouded in mystery. Cool locations are only accessible by appointment or during rare open days. Shatter these boundaries by taking the Space Tourist Amsterdam tour! You’ll explore the city’s cosmic connections and discover key sites in Amsterdam’s vibrant space ecosystem while using the city’s clockwork-like public transport system.
On this 150-minute hybrid walking-and-transit tour, I’ll show you places where the space industry actually operates. You’ll travel by tram, bus, and even stroll while I share anecdotes and insights that only space professionals know about. Space Tourist Amsterdam is all about the diversity of space business, research, and art.
The tour starts at the De Gooyer Windmill, where you’ll get into the space mindset. You’ll zigzag through Amsterdam on public transport, while I share some lesser-known space facts about the Maritime Museum and ARTIS. You’ll learn about the vibrant space industry in Amsterdam, and what people study at the Vrije Universiteit to make lunar settlements a reality.
And since it’s Amsterdam, you’ll also have an opportunity to enjoy some space-inspired art in the Stedelijk Museum. The tour ends on a philosophical note on Rembrandtplein. Here, you’ll see The Thinker, a golden astronaut inspired by the 19th-century artist Auguste Rodin’s sculpture of the same name, and be grounded in what is happening in space tourism today.
Along the way, you’ll have a chance to:
- Learn about the Association of Space Explorers, a group whose members include people who’ve completed at least one Earth orbit, or flown to the moon and back
- Relax on Amsterdam’s public transport as you take in more of the city, enjoying the sights and sounds from the comfort of your tram or bus seat
- Dig deeper with bonus tracks that cover the space exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
- Pass the NEMO Science Museum and hear about its space exhibition
- Enjoy a short stroll through the popular Museumplein and past the Rijksmuseum
- Experience the diversity of space businesses, space disciplines, and its fields of study
For me, space is everywhere. By the end of the tour, you’ll see it too. Spoiler alert: It is mainly here on Earth!
Please note that public transport tickets and entry fees to museums are not included in the tour price.

Alexandra Sokolowski
My name is Alexandra Sokolowski. I am a Marketing expert and have been working in the space industry for more than a decade. Today I have my own freelance business and consult space organisations around the world on how to improve their marketing. Space is my profession and my passion. It is important to me that more people know about the many cool things that we do. In 2019, I moved to Amsterdam for love and a space job. Even though Amsterdam is often not synonym with space, there is a lot of space happening here. It is my wish and my mission to make space accessible to everyone. There is way more to it than astronauts and rocket science. Let me open those doors for you and take you on a journey to become a space tourist!

Tips
Places to stop along the way
If you want to replenish your energy halfway the tour, grab a coffee and a Brazilian cheese bread at Buno at Amstelstation. They are usually open as of early in the morning and close around 5 pm.
An optional stop on the tour is a visit to the Stedelijk museum where you can visit the space exhibition. Entrance fees are not included in this tour.
Best time of day
From dawn to dusk and all year round. Ideally do the tour during daylight, so you can spot the locations while being seated in public transport.
Precautions
You will need either an OV chipcard, a bank card or a credit card to make use of public transport. If you are using your smartwatch or phone to pay, make sure it is charged before going on the tour. Always remember to badge in with your card when using public transport and badging out when leaving it.
During rush hour, some public transport might be slower or more crowded. For best experience, I recommend taking the tour outside of rush hour.
If it is raining, I advise taking a raincoat or an umbrella with you. This way you can stay dry when we walk between locations.
