Family-Friendly Amsterdam: A Walking Tour for Adults and Kids
About the Tour
This enchanting family walking tour transforms Amsterdam into a living storybook that both children and adults will remember long after returning home. You’ll join Professor Wonderbottom and his curious student Lola on an engaging adventure that combines education with entertainment in one of Europe’s most fascinating cities.
This family-friendly walking tour begins at Amsterdam Central Station, the bustling heart of the city. You’ll stroll down Damrak, which was once a real river before being filled in to create more land. I’ll also show you Dam Square with its impressive Royal Palace. Along the way, you’ll learn how Amsterdam’s clever residents transformed a swampy fishing village into one of the world’s greatest trading centers during the Golden Age.
Your adventure continues through hidden courtyards, lively squares, and the world-famous flower market floating on the Singel canal. You’ll discover why the Dutch went crazy for tulips, creating the world’s first economic bubble, and hear entertaining stories about narrow houses with hooks on top for hoisting furniture through windows. The tour ends at Rembrandtplein, where you’ll meet the Netherlands’ most celebrated artist, Rembrandt, through his bronze statue and learn about his extraordinary life.
On this 45-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Explore Amsterdam’s unique relationship with water and discover how the city was built on wooden poles
- Find out why Amsterdam houses are so famously narrow and tall
- Visit the peaceful Begijnhof, a hidden courtyard that feels like stepping into a fairy tale
- See the floating flower market where vendors sell tulips from houseboats permanently moored along the canal
- Learn about “Tulip Mania” when a single bulb could cost more than a house
- Discover the Muizenhuis (Mouse House) with its charming miniature world
- Hear entertaining stories about Dutch food, from raw herring that’s eaten by the tail to stroopwafels over hot coffee
- Admire the beautiful architecture along Amsterdam’s picturesque canals
By the end of this tour, you’ll have discovered Amsterdam’s fascinating history through engaging stories and fun facts, in this experience that’s designed to captivate young imaginations and delight curious adults alike.
