Abu Dhabı

Abu Dhabi means, roughly, father of the gazelle - legend has it that Bani Yas tribesmen followed one to a freshwater spring on this low island and built a capital around what it found. That founding is barely a century old: grandparents here remember a pearl-diving settlement of palm-frond huts, while their grandchildren drive the Corniche past glass towers and the white-domed sweep of Qasr Al Watan.

Most visitors meet only the layover version - a morning at a mosque, an afternoon at a theme park, then departures before dinner, mistaking a stopover for the city itself.
