Plaça Major
About
Plaça Major sits at the centre of Palma's old town, framed by yellow facades and shaded arcades. It looks cheerful enough now, with craft markets, café terraces and the occasional street performer. But for centuries this was the site of the House of the Inquisition, one of Mallorca's most feared institutions.

The square you're strolling through today was built over its ruins in the 1800s, after the city walls came down and the whole centre was reorganised. There's more beneath the surface, almost literally: an underground gallery once connected the square to nearby streets, used as a service passage. Look up at the balconies and you'll spot modernist details, survivors of an era when Palma remade itself as a European city.

VoiceMap's tours trace the square's darker past, connecting its Inquisition history to the "Inquisitor's slope" nearby, where the condemned once walked to their executions.
