Mallorca's coastline turned into resort strips earlier than almost anywhere else in Europe, and that's still the story most visitors hear first. Palma's old town has a much older one to tell.

Its cathedral – La Seu to locals – rose on the site of the city's Great Mosque after Christian forces took the island in 1229. A few streets over, the same thing happened to the synagogue that anchored the Jewish quarter: it became the Church of Monti-sion, its doorway still inscribed God loves the Gates of Zion. Families converted here under duress in 1435. Their descendants – the Chuetas – married only within their own fifteen surnames for five hundred years.
