York Ghost Adventure: A Paranormal Tour of England’s Ghost Capital
About the Tour
York isn’t just England’s most historic city – it’s officially Europe’s most haunted.
On this spine-chilling walking tour, you’ll discover the dark underbelly of a place where 2,000 years of history have created the perfect conditions for supernatural activity. As you walk, you’ll hear about poltergeists, spectral monks, murdered children, and other entities that refused to leave when their mortal lives ended.
The tour starts in the Museum Gardens, once home to St. Mary’s Abbey, where the ghostly silhouette of a faceless monk still stalks the ruins. You’ll weave through York’s atmospheric streets, passing haunted pubs where objects move of their own accord and temperatures drop without explanation. Along the way, you’ll hear spine-tingling tales of the sinister Barghest (a demonic black dog whose appearance foretells death) and the violent poltergeist that terrorizes unsuspecting shoppers at The Body Shop.
The tour ends at the imposing Castle Prison, where a woman’s ghostly singing echoes through the corridors.
During this 90-minute tour you’ll also have a chance to:
- See Clifford’s Tower, the site of a horrific medieval massacre, and learn about highwayman Dick Turpin’s final days in York before his execution
- Hear about the Treasurer’s House, where a plumber witnessed an entire legion of Roman soldiers marching through the cellar
- Pass The Golden Fleece, York’s most haunted pub, home to 15 different ghosts including the spirit of a Canadian airman who fell to his death
- Explore the narrow, medieval lanes of The Shambles, where a phantom follower has been photographed stalking unsuspecting visitors
- Learn about the nun who was bricked up alive for breaking her vow of chastity
- Listen to the chilling tale of the ghostly Tudor-era “Stick Man” who still patrols his home on Stonegate
- Visit York Minster and discover why the spirit of a naval officer appeared to his sister years after his death
Bring comfortable walking shoes and your courage as you explore a city where the dead are as much a part of daily life as the living. You may not see a ghost yourself, but you’ll never look at York the same way again.
