Toronto by Transit: 504 King Streetcar Tour
About the Tour
Experience Toronto like a local on this unique hop-on, hop-off streetcar journey across Canada's largest city. This 90-minute audio tour follows the 504 King route from Broadview Station in the east to Dundas West Station, revealing the stories behind Toronto's rapid transformation from muddy frontier town to North America's most multicultural metropolis.
I'm a Toronto resident since 2003 who grew up admiring the TTC as a small-town kid. I'll share insider knowledge while you glide through diverse neighborhoods on one of the city's busiest transit routes. From the gentrified Victorian homes of Riverdale to the industrial-turned-artistic spaces of Liberty Village, you'll witness how Toronto's streetcar network connects communities that each tell a different chapter of the city's story.
This tour is designed for maximum flexibility—stay on the streetcar for the full journey or hop off to explore neighborhoods that catch your interest. You'll cross the historic Don River, pass through the financial district's gleaming towers, and discover how Toronto's buried creeks and railways shaped the urban landscape we see today.
On this 75 minute tour, you'll:
- Ride across the Queen Street Bridge with its poetic inscription
this river I step in is not the river I stand in
while learning about the Don River that carved Toronto's dramatic valley - Discover Old Toronto at St. Lawrence Market and St. James Cathedral, where the city began as York in 1793 and survived two Great Fires that reshaped the downtown core
- Experience the Entertainment District's theater concentration, from the 1907 Royal Alexandra Theatre to Roy Thomson Hall, home of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra
- Learn about the hidden Garrison Creek that once flowed 7 kilometers to Lake Ontario, now buried beneath streets that still flood during major storms
- Explore Corktown, Toronto's oldest neighborhood, where Irish workers from County Cork lived near the world's largest whiskey distillery in the 1800s
- Visit the site where Toronto's 2015 Pan Am Games athletes' village became the thriving Canary District, built on reclaimed industrial land
- Discover Liberty Village's transformation from prison grounds to manufacturing hub to one of Toronto's most vibrant condo communities
- Pass through Parkdale, where mansion homes became rooming houses before the neighborhood reinvented itself as
Vegandale
with a thriving arts scene
Experience Toronto's evolution from Muddy York
to a world-class city through the windows of the streetcars that have connected its communities for over 130 years.
Please note: The tour does not include the cost to ride the streetcar.

Thanks for joining me on one of my tours! I've lived in Toronto and area for over 20 years, and I love this city.
One of the most distinctive features of Toronto is its Streetcar - or tram - network, which will take you all around the city, through its many neighbourhoods, and to many of its most important sites. It's my favourite way of getting around, and I hope that these tours will allow you to see the city the way that I do.
As I build out my collection of tours, feel free to check out my website and Youtube page.
Safe travels!

Directions to Starting Point
The tour begins inside Broadview Station on TTC Subway line 2 ( the Green Line) at the 504 Streetcar Platform. It can be reached by all mass transit, and for people driving into the city, there is a Green P Parking Lot adjacent to the station.
You need to "tap" to pay your transit fare. You can use any major credit card at the fare gates, or you can download the Presto app to use. Riders get a 2-hour travel window per payment, so you have plenty of time on the route. You need to use the same card to tap when you change streetcars. You can only use one credit card per person to pay for fares, so make sure each member of your group has their own payment method. Children 12 years and younger ride for free.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
Highlights of the tour are:
- Greektown - the neighbourhood the tour begins in
- Riverdale Park - great views of downtown
- St. Lawrence and Old Toronto - beautiful post-Great Fire architecture and the World Famous St. Lawrence Market (this is where you will change streetcars, as the 504 Streetcar line is broken into two portions)
- Entertainment District - the hub of Toronto's theatre and film industry, with many theatres, concert halls, and cinemas
- Parkdale - one of Toronto's oldest and most diverse neighbourhoods, lots of great shops and restaurants
- Roncesvalles Village - once the primary home to Toronto's Polish community, it's now another vibrant, diverse community with lots of great shops to check out
Best time of day
The TTC is usually busy, but weekdays during rush hour (7am - 10am and 4pm - 7pm) are the busiest.
Precautions
Toronto is a very safe city. The main challenges will be congestion, both in terms of people and traffic. Pack patience. Be aware of your surroundings so you're not blocking pathways for people who aren't on vacation. You can drink and eat on the TTC, so bring snacks and bottled water. There are also many places along the way you can hop off, take photos, and experience the city the way we do.
