About the Tour

Tokyo is unparalleled in its fusion of traditional Japanese culture and bold fashion.

On this walking tour through Harajuku, you’ll find out how this district went from a quiet village with waterwheels, to becoming the epicenter of Japan’s youth culture and street fashion. You’ll experience the vibrant energy that’s made the area a global trendsetting hub for decades and, while you walk, I’ll tell you about the layered history of the area.

The tour starts at the Omotesando Town Corner Garden, once part of the historic Onden village that inspired Hokusai’s famous woodblock prints. You’ll weave through quiet, European-inspired enclaves like Brahms Path with its classical music connections.

You’ll explore galleries that fuel the district’s creative energy and see iconic fashion institutions like X-Girl, founded by Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon. Along the way, you’ll learn how motorcycle culture from Britain and America shaped Harajuku’s rebellious spirit, and get a sense of the area’s ongoing transformation as high-end retailers move in. The tour ends at Meiji Park, a green space showcasing modern Tokyo’s commitment to urban wellbeing near the Olympic Stadium.

On this 60-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:

  • Visit the striking kaleidoscope entrance of Tokyu Plaza Omotesando with its mesmerizing mirror-covered escalators
  • Experience the colorful chaos of Takeshita-dori, birthplace of kawaii culture and legendary fashion subcultures that continue to influence runways worldwide
  • Discover “Unknown Harajuku,” an incubator for the district’s next generation of culture housed in a renovated traditional Japanese home
  • Explore Cat Street, the winding former riverbed that became the epicenter of Tokyo’s influential “Ura-Hara” street fashion boom
  • Learn about Japan’s complex relationship with tattoo culture, from ancient indigenous practices to modern artistic renaissance
  • Peek into Film Camera Tokyo, where meticulously tested vintage cameras are sourced from across Japan
  • Browse Council Flat 1, a specialty shop curated by a legendary stylist obsessed with authentic British street culture
  • See the historic pedestrian bridge where the Takenoko-zoku dancers gathered in the 1970s, cementing Harajuku as a stage for public self-expression

Experience the neighborhood where youth rebellion meets high fashion, traditional craftsmanship intersects with cutting-edge design, and every street corner reveals another layer of Tokyo’s fascinating cultural evolution.

Tour Producer

Hi, I'm Jason.

I've lived in Tokyo since 2017. As a professional photographer, one of my many goals is to use my digital and film cameras to capture, everyday scenes. In addition to having the good fortune to have my work displayed in numerous photography exhibitions here in Tokyo, my work has been featured in a large number of magazines in Japan, the United States, and Canada.

I love interacting with tourists, showing newcomers around Tokyo, and working with international creatives. My life revolves around my tours and photo walks, which invite people to take their time and intentionally explore Tokyo. Together, we venture beyond the popular tourist destinations to discover hidden gems and occasionally peaceful outskirts of specific neighborhoods — areas of Tokyo that some people never see. I'm excited to tell you these fascinating tales and give you an unforgettable time in Tokyo. Oh, and if you're looking for portraits, I'm your guy. Connect with me for a fun session.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

I really like Chop Coffee Cat Street, which you'll pass on the tour, because the coffee is good and it's a nice break. Looking for a larger place? Visit HATTO Coffee a bit further along our tour. It's relaxing but a bit more vibrant. Grab a snack! If you're in the area on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday after 5pm, definitely hit Harry's Sandwich Company. Tasty sandwiches done right!

Best time of day

I prefer exploring Harajuku after 11am since most shops will be open at that time.

Precautions

During the summer, Tokyo is very hot and humid, and the winter is usually pretty dry. Please take precautions and bring water and snacks.
