Exploring Shinjuku’s Contrast and Culture: From Quiet to Chaotic
About the Tour
Tokyo’s Shinjuku district is like a study in contrast, where ancient shrines stand side by side with neon-lit entertainment zones.
On this walking tour, you’ll experience this fascinating cultural juxtaposition firsthand, exploring everything from tranquil Shinto sanctuaries to the legendary Golden Gai bar district. As you walk, you’ll hear about the history that binds these seemingly opposite worlds together.
This tour starts at Hanazono Shrine, which dates back to 1590 and serves as the spiritual guardian of Shinjuku. You’ll explore the shrine’s main hall and learn about its connection to the entertainment world through its dedication to Inari, the god of worldly success. From there, you’ll venture into the famous Golden Gai, a network of narrow alleyways housing nearly 300 tiny bars, each with its own unique theme and atmosphere.
Along the way, you’ll find out how Shinjuku transformed from post-WWII black markets to cultural epicenters. You’ll see evidence of the district’s evolution through landmarks like the towering Godzilla Head and historic Omoide Yokocho (“Memory Lane”). I’ll also tell you about the area’s connection to counterculture movements, avant-garde theater, and its role in shaping Japan’s entertainment industry. The tour ends at the historic Basuiso Horse Trough, a diplomatic gift from London that symbolizes Shinjuku’s transformation from working-class district to global metropolis.
During this 60-minute journey through Shinjuku, you’ll have a chance to:
- Explore Geino Asama Shrine, dedicated to performing arts and frequented by actors, singers, and media professionals
- Discover Golden Gai’s themed bars, including punk-inspired Hair of the Dogs and anime-themed ANIME HOLIC
- Visit Albatross G, a three-story bar with Baroque-Victorian décor and chandeliers
- Witness the giant 3D Calico Cat billboard, a technological marvel combining cutting-edge display technology with kawaii culture
- Wander through Omoide Yokocho, formerly known as “Piss Alley,” now home to traditional yakitori stalls dating back to 1947
- Stroll through the Shinjuku Nishiguchi Underground Passage, once the gathering place for 1960s folk singers and anti-war activists
By the end of this tour, you’ll have experienced the remarkable cultural contrast that defines Shinjuku, where ancient traditions and cutting-edge modernity coexist in fascinating harmony.

Jason Garcia
Hi, I'm Jason.
I've lived in Tokyo since 2017. As a professional photographer, one of my many goals is to use my digital and film cameras to capture, everyday scenes. In addition to having the good fortune to have my work displayed in numerous photography exhibitions here in Tokyo, my work has been featured in a large number of magazines in Japan, the United States, and Canada.
I love interacting with tourists, showing newcomers around Tokyo, and working with international creatives. My life revolves around my tours and photo walks, which invite people to take their time and intentionally explore Tokyo. Together, we venture beyond the popular tourist destinations to discover hidden gems and occasionally peaceful outskirts of specific neighborhoods — areas of Tokyo that some people never see. I'm excited to tell you these fascinating tales and give you an unforgettable time in Tokyo. Oh, and if you're looking for portraits, I'm your guy. Connect with me for a fun session.

There are a number of restaurants and bars to catch your breath or to grab a drink (if you so desire). Most of the places in Golden Gai are very relaxed, so you won't have to worry about intruding. You're a guest! Golden Gai's establishments may open in the late afternoon, but mostly in the evening. In other areas, you'll find many places to rest.
Best time of day
Anytime in this whole area is fun, but if you want a more lively scene, definitely go in the evening. This area, especially Golden Gai and Kabukicho, come alive at night!
