A Forest That Listens: A Meiji Jingu Forest and Garden Audio Guide
About the Tour
Not all forests are ancient. Some are planted for the future.
Just beside Harajuku, Meiji Jingu’s vast woodland feels as if it has always been here. But this forest began as a grand vision: a barren piece of land, planted by many hands over 100 years ago.
If our Omairi tour helps you understand the meaning of a traditional shrine visit and the history and culture of Meiji Jingu, this companion walk invites you to experience another side of the shrine: its Inner Garden, living forest, quiet ponds, seasonal flowers, birdsong, and shifting light.
This self-guided audio tour begins at the Second Torii Gate and leads you through Meiji Jingu Gyoen, the Inner Garden, before continuing into the wider forest. Rather than focusing on shrine worship rituals, this walk turns your attention toward nature, history, and the senses - how water moves through the garden, how trees planted a century ago now form a self-sustaining woodland, and how even fallen leaves return to nourish the soil.
On this 90-minute walking tour, you’ll have a chance to
・Step inside Meiji Jingu Gyoen, the peaceful Inner Garden that existed before the shrine was built
・See Kiyomasa’s Well, a clear spring that quietly sustains the garden’s water system
・Pass by Meiji Jingu Museum and Forest Terrace, where you can pause for exhibitions, architecture, lunch, tea, or a quiet rest among the trees
・Notice birds, trees, sunlight, gravel, and the subtle changes in sound and air
・Learn how Meiji Jingu’s forest was planned, planted, and entrusted to grow over 100 years
・Visit the North Pond and the open lawn before the Treasure Museum
・Experience forest bathing in one of Tokyo’s most peaceful green sanctuaries
Created by Retreatrip, this tour is for travelers who want more than a quick visit to a famous landmark. It offers gentle cultural and historical context, practical route guidance, and quiet pauses for looking, listening, and feeling the forest at your own pace. Along the way, you’ll also discover a few hidden gems within Meiji Jingu that even many Japanese visitors tend to miss.
The route is mostly flat, with some gravel paths. Please bring 500 yen in cash for the Inner Garden maintenance fee. You may also want to allow extra time if you plan to stop at the café, visit the museum, or relax on the lawn.
※ Please note: This tour does not include a visit to the Main Shrine area for worship.
If you would like guidance on visiting the Main Shrine and offering a prayer, please see our other tour, “Meiji Jingu Audio Guide to Omairi: Ritual, Forest and Sacred Space.”

Directions to Starting Point
This tour is especially enjoyable after Retreatrip’s companion tour, “Meiji Jingu Audio Guide to Omairi: Ritual, Forest and Sacred Space”.
The tour begins in front of the Second Torii Gate inside Meiji Jingu, not at the first torii gate near Harajuku Station.
From the Omotesando Exit, also known as the West Exit, of JR Harajuku Station, or from Exit 2 of Tokyo Metro Meiji-jingumae Station, walk toward the main entrance of Meiji Jingu. Pass through the first large wooden torii gate and continue straight along the main forested approach for several minutes.
You will arrive at another large wooden torii gate. This is the Second Torii Gate, and this is where the tour begins. The entrance to Meiji Jingu Gyoen, the Inner Garden, is nearby.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
Several places on this route are also worth spending more time at, depending on your pace. Meiji Jingu Museum and Forest Terrace Meiji Jingu are both introduced during the tour, but you may want to pause longer for the exhibition, architecture, lunch, tea, or a quiet rest among the trees.
Near the end of the tour, the open lawn in front of the Treasure Museum is a lovely place to sit or lie down if the weather is good.
After the tour, you may also like to visit Yoyogi Park, which is located next to Meiji Jingu. It is a good option if you would like to continue enjoying the greener side of Tokyo.
Best time of day
This tour can be enjoyed all year round, but because it includes Meiji Jingu Gyoen, the Inner Garden, please plan your visit around the garden’s opening hours as well as the shrine’s gate hours.
Meiji Jingu itself is open every day, opening with sunrise and closing with sunset. The gate hours change by month. Throughout the year, the shrine generally opens between 5:00 AM and 6:40 AM, and closes between 4:00 PM and 6:30 PM.
The Inner Garden is usually open from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with shorter hours in winter. Admission usually ends 30 minutes before closing. Please check the latest hours before you visit, especially in winter, during the New Year period, or around seasonal events.
For the best experience, we recommend starting this tour on a weekday morning, ideally around 9:00 or 10:00 AM. The garden and forest paths are quieter, the air often feels fresher, and you will have enough time to enjoy the Inner Garden, forest, museum area, café, and lawn without rushing.
This tour is especially recommended for days when you have time to slow down — when you want to feel close to nature in Tokyo, experience it through culture and history, sense a quiet Japanese way of seeing the world, take a gentle walk, or spend a little time reconnecting with yourself.
Precautions
Please bring at least 500 yen in cash for the Inner Garden maintenance fee. The garden does not accept cashless payment.
Please make sure to use earphones or headphones during this tour, as the audio is designed to play automatically as you walk. Please keep the volume low enough to hear your surroundings and be considerate of other visitors.
The route is mostly flat, but it includes gravel paths, garden paths, some steps, and areas near ponds. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended
