About the Tour

No trip to San Francisco is complete without a visit to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. On this walking tour, you’ll join the ranks of over 16,000 visitors who cross this marvel of engineering every day.

The tour starts in front of the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center where you’ll hear how suspension bridges work, and discover how this design allows the bridge to span the vast distances and withstand dynamic loads like wind and traffic. You'll gain a newfound respect for the ingenuity and effort that went into creating this architectural masterpiece.

As you traverse the bridge, you’ll delve into its rich history and learn a few fun facts along the way. You’ll hear the tale of its construction during the Great Depression, the vision of structural engineer Joseph Strauss, and the Art Deco design elements contributed by architect Irving Morrow. You’ll find out how the bridge met (and eventually) overcame opposition and natural challenges. And hear how its completion ahead of schedule and under budget in 1937 was celebrated. The stories of the workers, the safety innovations, and the grand opening will leave you in awe of this monumental achievement.

The tour also covers the significant events that shaped San Francisco, from the 1849 Gold Rush that transformed a sleepy town into a bustling city, to the devastating 1906 earthquake that led to its rapid modernization. As you reach the H. Dana Bowers Memorial Vista Point where the tour ends, you’ll have an opportunity to take in the modern skyline and surrounding attractions from Fort Point.

On this one-hour tour, you’ll:

  • Learn the fascinating story behind the creation of this global landmark
  • Find out how the 1849 Gold Rush transformed San Francisco
  • Dive into the history of San Francisco's iconic transportation system, the Cable Car
  • Understand the impact of the 1906 earthquake and its devastation on the city.

Getting There

Route Overview

VoiceMap tours follow a route from a set starting point. It’s how we give turn-by-turn directions and tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.
  1. Total distance
    3km
  2. Distance back to start location
    3km

Directions to Starting Point

The tour starts in front of the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center (Golden Gate Bridge Plaza, San Francisco).

There are multiple parking lots for the Golden Gate Bridge. The first is by far the smallest and it's unlikely you'll be able to park there unless you go very early in the morning. There are three other parking lots available. If you're like me and would rather park a little farther away instead of circling for parking, I'd suggest The CNG parking lot on Lincoln Blvd. It's pretty much almost empty because most people don't know it's there. It's also only about a 2 or 3 minute walk from the main parking lots so it's not like you're parking very far away.

From the parking lots, the quickest way to the tour starting point is to follow Lincoln Blvd, turn onto Merchant Road and follow Merchant Road under the bridge. On the other side of the bridge you'll pop out at the Welcome Center and the starting point is just beyond the Welcome Center.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

Stop in at Equator Coffees in the Round House Cafe for a cup of coffee. They have great coffee and are focused on quality, sustainability and social responsibility. If you're lucky you'll be able to snag a seat at the window with the heart sticker on it. It creates the perfect frame for a picture of the bridge.

Best time of day

Sunrise and sunset are the best times. Sunrise has the added advantage of avoiding the crowds that will build up during the day and especially at sunset.

Precautions

Car break ins are frequent in San Francisco's tourist areas. Don't leave anything in sight and, don't have luggage in the trunk either.

The weather in San Francisco can fluctuate wildly. Just because you're in short sleeves in one place doesn't mean the weather will be the same at the bridge. In fact the San Francisco side of the bridge can feel much colder than the Marin side. Wear layers so you're prepared for changes in temp.

“Great app. walk around at your own pace, stop where you want, move on or speed up when you want. Read the script before you go or during the commentary, speed it up or replay it. Repeat the tour whenever you like.”
