Hillside Hollywood and Secret Stairways: An Ashbury Heights Tour
About the Tour
Within San Francisco’s hills, you’ll find a network of secret stairways that connect Hollywood legends’ former homes. On this walking tour, you’ll discover how earthquakes, urban planning, and social movements shaped communities and architectural styles from the Victorian era until today.
Starting at the corner of Duboce Avenue and Buena Vista Avenue East, you’ll stroll through Buena Vista Park, where cemetery headstones were repurposed for the walkways. You’ll wind through the exclusive Ashbury Terrace neighborhood with its multi-million-dollar homes. You’ll have an opportunity to use several secret stairways that feel like private passages but serve as public throughways, connecting San Francisco’s otherwise isolated hillside communities.
As you walk, you’ll see filming locations from Marvel’s Ant-Man, climb the Monument Way and Vulcan stairways and enjoy sweeping vistas from atop Mount Olympus Park, where a statue once marked the city’s geographic center. The tour ends in the Castro District at the Pink Triangle Memorial, where you’ll find out how the neighborhood evolved from Eureka Valley (or ‘Little Scandinavia’) to the heart of America’s LGBT movement.
On this 90-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- View Ambassador James Hormel’s former home and see the Too Close for Comfort TV show house from the 1980s
- Hear the remarkable story of Edith Cook, who was found perfectly preserved in a casket during a 2017 home renovation
- Visit the Buena Vista mansion where Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills & Nash lived, later home to Don’t Worry Be Happy singer Bobby McFerrin
- Stand outside Rudolph Valentino’s modest bungalow and learn how the Latin Lover launched his career
- See the mini-mansion of Norma Talmadge, a superstar of the Silent Screen
- Learn about the brothers who made their living blowing up parts of the city, and how their greed ended in murder
By the end of this tour, you’ll have discovered San Francisco’s vertical neighborhoods where every stairway tells a story of the city’s cinematic past.

Directions to Starting Point
The tour begins at the top of Duboce Avenue as it intersects with Buena Vista Park.
The quickest route via public transit is to make your way to Church Street and Market either via the Metro subway via Church Street Station (all outbound subway lines from downtown except for N and T), or above ground using the historic streetcars (F-Market line). Or use Google Maps to find the shortest transit route from your origin.
At Church and Market streets, you'll wait at the bus stop in front of George's Market (702 14th Street), and you'll board the 37-Corbett Inbound to Masonic & Haight. The bus will take you up steep 14th Street a total of six stops, where you'll exit at Buena Vista Terrace & Buena Vista Avenue East.
If arriving by taxi or ride share, the destination address is 5 Buena Vista Terrace.
If driving, there is normally some parking around, but do heed the parking signs to avoid street cleaning days. Normally, you can park for up to two hours for free - do be sure to curb your wheels (parking uphill, point your wheels away from the curb; parking downhill, point your wheels into the curb).
Tips
Places to stop along the way
Toward the end of the walk, Cafe Josephine offers soups, salads, pastries, and hot and cold beverages - including vegan and gluten-free options (Closed Sunday and Monday).
The end of the tour lands you in the Castro neighborhood with tons of options. I recommend grabbing a drink at the historic Twin Peaks Tavern or heading down Market Street to Catch French Bistro. Other sit-down favorites included Fable and Starbelly. But there are many other options. For one-of-a-kind souvenirs, pop into Local Take.
Best time of day
This tour is best from dawn to dusk when the weather is good. Avoid excessively rainy days, as some of the park trails are unpaved and would be muddy.
Precautions
This is a safe walk through upscale neighborhoods and parks. Do mind traffic when crossing streets. This walk is not accessible as there are several stairways throughout. This may be strenuous if you aren't used to hills. Bring some water and take your time. There is one restroom along the way at Cafe Josephine near Corona Heights Park.
