Ronda

La ciudad soñada. I have sought everywhere the city of my dreams, and I have finally found it in Ronda, wrote Rilke. He wasn't alone. Hemingway kept coming back to drink the wine and watch the bulls. Orson Welles asked to be buried here. For a town of 35,000 people perched above an ancient gorge, Ronda has an outsized pull on the imagination.

El Tajo gorge divides the city in two: on one side the old Moorish quarter, La Ciudad, where Arab baths and the Mondragón palace survive; on the other, the newer El Mercadillo, where Spain's oldest stone bullring still hosts the annual Goyesca corrida. The Puente Nuevo stitches them together, vaulting 100 metres above the canyon floor. It took 40 years to build.
