Pisa’s Square of Miracles: An Audio Tour around the UNESCO Site
About the Tour
Pisa’s medieval glory is alive in its Piazza dei Miracoli, or Square of Miracles. Here, four magnificent monuments tell the story of one of Italy’s greatest maritime republics. On this 90-minute tour, you’ll explore every corner of this UNESCO World Heritage site, from the world’s largest baptistery to the city’s famous Leaning Tower.
Starting in front of the Porta Nuova entrance gate, you’ll step through the medieval Mura di Pisa (city walls) into a carefully planned sacred space, where each building represents a stage of Catholic life. Along with taking in the exterior facades, you’ll see the baptistery’s soaring interior, the cathedral’s golden baroque ceiling and its Gothic pulpit masterpiece. In Camposanto Monumentale, the monumental cemetery, you’ll learn about its restored 14th-century frescoes.
As you walk, you’ll hear about the layers of history often overlooked by visitors, including the fierce medieval rivalry between Pisa and Florence that shaped the square’s development, and the devastating 1944 bombing that destroyed priceless artworks. The tour ends at the Tower of Pisa, the world’s most famous architectural ”mistake”.
On this tour, you’ll:
- Enter Battistero di San Giovanni, and discover why the baptistry has both lead and terracotta roof tiles on its distinctive dome
- Marvel at Cattedrale di Pisa’s 68 monolithic granite columns, transported from Sardinia and Elba in the 11th century
- Examine Giovanni Pisano’s Gothic pulpit, carved from a single block of Carrara marble with over 350 individual figures
- See the Roman sarcophagi that line medieval cloisters
- Learn why the 1595 fire destroyed the cathedral’s original medieval interior, leading to the golden baroque ceiling you see today
- Understand the complex engineering behind the Leaning Tower’s four-degree tilt and the 11-year restoration that stabilised it
- Find out how Pisa’s power as a maritime republic during the Crusades funded these architectural masterpieces
- Spot evidence of the 1944 Allied bombing that damaged the square, sparking decades of careful restoration work
By the end of this tour, you’ll have heard the story of Pisa’s Golden Age through the monuments that have inspired visitors for nearly a millennium.

Andrea - DiscoveryPisa
Hi, I’m Andrea – Founder of Discovery Pisa and Official Tour Guide
I’m originally from Madrid, Spain, but my journey with Pisa started in 2008 when I came here for a year of study through the Erasmus program. As soon as I arrived, I fell in love with this city—its beauty, history, and the vibrant atmosphere of daily life. After finishing my studies, I decided to stay in Pisa, and that decision changed my life forever.
I knew I wanted to share my newfound love for this city, so I took the step to become a licensed tour guide in 2012. After receiving my qualification, I was inspired to create Discovery Pisa. My goal was to give everyone the chance to explore Pisa with an expert guide—because before we came along, the only options for a guided tour were either private tours or pre-organized group trips. I wanted to open up a new world of experiences for independent travelers who wanted to organize their own vacations but still have the opportunity to enjoy a local, insightful tour of the city.
Founding Discovery Pisa has been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve done in my life. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built, and it’s a true joy to be able to share Pisa’s wonders with people from all around the world. I’m also incredibly grateful to work alongside an amazing team, including my wonderful partner Anastasia, who helps make Discovery Pisa a fantastic company.
I’m so happy to do this job every day, and I can’t wait to continue sharing my love for Pisa with all of you!

Directions to Starting Point
The tour starts at the arch of Porta Nuova, on the eastern side of Piazza dei Miracoli.
There are several ways to get there:
• 🚗 By car: there are different parking options nearby – both paid and free.
• 🚆 By train: from Pisa Centrale train station, you can take a busthat drops you right near the starting point.
• 🚶♂️ Or you can walk – it’s about 20–25 minutes from the station.
Look for the big stone arch – that’s Porta Nuova. You’ll find us just under or around it!
Tips
Places to stop along the way
Piazza dei Miracoli is where all the monuments we talk about are located. There are also two museums worth checking out, both connected to the history of the square.
You’ll find plenty of restaurants and cafés in the area. Most are tourist-oriented – which means:
• The food is usually good
• But prices will be higher than in the rest of town (still cheaper than Florence or Venice!)
Our tip? After exploring the square, head into the historic city center. It’s beautiful, much less crowded, and gives you a real feel of local life in Pisa.
Best time of day
That depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.
If you want to enter the monuments, we recommend checking real-time opening hours on the official website:
Opening times change with the seasons, so it’s always a good idea to plan ahead.
If you’re just doing the outside tour, then really any time is fine.
That said, during summer, the best times are:
• Before 10 AM, or
• After 7 PM, when the crowds start to disappear and the light is softer.
Evening visits have a special vibe – quieter, cooler, almost spiritual. And in spring or autumn, the weather is usually nice all day long.
Precautions
Piazza dei Miracoli is a safe area, but – like in all popular tourist spots – keep an eye on your bag and pockets. Pickpockets are always around, especially in summer.
Also, summer in Pisa can be very hot and humid. So:
• Bring water 💧
• Wear a hat and sunscreen ☀️
• And don’t push yourself too hard during the hottest hours.
