The Pearl of the Balkans: Ohrid’s Ancient Lake & UNESCO Treasures
About the Tour
Perched along the shimmering shores of Lake Ohrid, this hillside city was created by a mosaic of civilizations. From Byzantine to Roman, Ottoman, and Macedonian, each left behind stones, symbols, and stories. On this walking tour, you’ll move through layers of history, art, and legend – all packed into one unforgettable descent from fortress walls to lakeside cliffs.
The tour begins high above the town at the Upper Gate and Samuel’s Fortress, where the views are as sweeping as the history. You’ll wind your way through cobbled streets and timeless neighborhoods, passing ancient theaters, hidden courtyards, and quiet churches still holding onto centuries-old secrets.
But this tour isn’t just about ruins and relics. It’s about how the past still breathes through the present. We’ll pass workshops where handmade paper and woodcarving traditions continue, stroll through buzzing squares, and follow paths that open into lake vistas so stunning they feel almost unreal.
The final stretch leads you to Ohrid’s crown jewel – the cliffside Church of St. John at Kaneo – where time slows, the lake stretches wide, and you’ll understand why Ohrid is called the “Pearl of the Balkans.”
During this two-hour tour, you’ll also have the chance to:
- Peek into the Ancient Macedonian Theatre of Lychnidos, still used for summer performances
- Visit the Church of Saints Clement of Ohrid and Panteleimon, where Macedonia’s spiritual and literary heritage runs deep
- Pass through Varosh, the old town’s soul, full of Ottoman charm and hidden courtyards
- Consider the recent controversies surrounding the name and identity of the country
- Stroll Ohrid’s famous boardwalk, hugging the lake’s edge in cinematic style
- Watch artisans in action utilizing techniques crafted across generations
- Catch your breath (and a photo) at the iconic Kaneo Viewpoint, where lake and legend meet
Whether you’re a history lover, a culture seeker, or just someone who appreciates a damn good view, this tour will leave you with a deeper connection to one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities.

Heidi Nicklaus
Hey there!
I’m Heidi, an American originally from New Jersey. After quitting my job and traveling solo, I fell in love with a Bulgarian man and moved to Sofia.
I have a not-so-subtle obsession with exploring the world. I’ve traveled through 50+ countries and spent months solo in the Balkans, always curious about the people, stories, and cultures I encounter.
After over a decade in Student Affairs and Higher Education, I learned to lead with empathy, listen deeply, and value diverse perspectives skills I now bring to every city I explore. That always-learning mindset turned me into the over-eager, unofficial tour guide who can’t stop sharing stories about wherever I am.
Now, as a group fitness instructor and whimsical yoga teacher, I combine my love of movement and exploration through my blog, HeidiRunsAbroad - helping fellow travelers stay active and turn every trip into an adventure. Walking tours are a natural fit: they get you moving, spark curiosity, and bring a place to life.
As a tour publisher, I focus on designing thoughtful, efficient walking routes that help you get the most out of your time exploring - whether you follow the tour start to finish or use it as the backbone for a longer day of wandering.
Through creating tours, I’ve also become fascinated by how language shapes travel experiences, especially when locals and visitors use different names for places and people. Those small differences often reveal a lot about history, identity, and power.
Though I’m not always a local expert, I’m always a passionate traveler - learning from locals through Couchsurfing, coffee shop conversations, and the streets themselves. Building and sharing a tour is one of the best ways I now learn about a city: connecting the dots, walking the streets, and telling the story.
