About the Tour

Nazaré is a town of extraordinary contradictions: a medieval pilgrimage site that became the world capital of big-wave surfing. On this walking tour, you'll trace the legends, fishing traditions, and religious devotion that have shaped this clifftop community for centuries. You'll also discover how a local bodyboarder's tip to a Hawaiian surfer put Nazaré on the global map.

The tour begins at the Miradouro do Suberco, a clifftop viewpoint with sweeping views over the Atlantic. From here, you'll explore the Ermida da Memória – a tiny chapel built to mark the spot where, according to legend, a knight's horse stopped at the cliff's edge in 1182, saved by divine intervention. You'll continue to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré, whose richly tiled interior and gilded altarpiece reflect centuries of royal patronage, before heading out to the Lighthouse of São Miguel Arcanjo and the legendary Praia do Norte.

Along the way, you'll find out how the Nazaré Canyon – Europe's largest underwater canyon, plunging over 5,000 metres – creates the conditions for waves that have shattered Guinness World Records. Descending through narrow backstreets, you'll encounter street murals, panoramic viewpoints, and the famous Ascensor funicular that has linked the clifftop village to the beach since 1889. The tour ends at the Living Museum of Dried Fish, where local women still cure Atlantic fish on open-air racks using techniques passed down through generations.

On this 75-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:

  • Examine the azulejo panel depicting the 1182 miracle that made Nazaré a pilgrimage destination
  • Learn how Garrett McNamara's record-breaking 2011 ride transformed a fishing town into a global surfing phenomenon
  • Visit the Nazaré Canyon Interpretation Centre inside the lighthouse fort, built in 1577 against Atlantic pirates
  • Explore the traditional fishing boat exhibition and learn about the Arte Xávega net-hauling technique, once performed by teams of oxen
  • Browse Nazaré's Municipal Market, where restaurants still source their daily catch
  • See the paired seafront monuments honouring both the fishermen lost at sea and the families who waited ashore

Pull on comfortable shoes – there's a rewarding climb back up to the Sítio – and let Nazaré's remarkable story unfold around you.

Hi! My name is Sara Cruz, and I live in Coimbra, a charming city in central Portugal that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013.

I hold a degree in Tourism, Leisure and Heritage from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Coimbra, the oldest university in Portugal, founded in 1290. I also completed a postgraduate degree in Musicology, specializing in Portuguese guitar, with a particular focus on its morphology and soundscapes.

In 2012, I founded GO! Walks Portugal with the aim of sharing the rich cultural heritage of my city and region. I began by creating themed walking tours in Coimbra, and by 2015, I had expanded to other parts of the country - especially across Central Portugal, home to some of my favorite monuments and many off-the-beaten-path villages that remain untouched by mass tourism and preserve some of the most important cultural legacies of Portugal.

I speak Portuguese, English, and Spanish fluently, and I truly enjoy welcoming people and showing them the very best my country has to offer. Organizing unique cultural experiences is a big part of why I started working with tourism, and creating these audio tours has been a wonderful challenge that I embraced with heart and soul. I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I do!

Tips

Places to stop along the way

As we go you'll find plenty of places to stop for a drink or a meal - I will recommend some of them.

Best time of day

You can do this tour anytime of the day. During spring and summer time, mornings are a bit busier from 10am onwards, so if you want to have an early start, you'll avoid the crowds and the heat. Autumn and Winter are usually very quiet anytime of the day.

Precautions

Always be aware of your surroundings in busier areas, and watch out for pickpockets. Nazaré is a safe place and nothing should happen, but it's better to prevent! Bring an umbrella, water, sunglasses, and use sunscreen, to protect yourself from the heat. 59
