About the Tour

Madrid is one of Europe's most layered capital cities, where royal ambition, literary feuds, and financial rivalries are written into every street corner. On this walking tour, you'll follow a route from Puerta del Sol through the aristocratic Jerónimos neighborhood to the cobblestoned Barrio de las Letras. You'll also hear how the same streets that once carried royal carriages and livestock herds became the backdrop for coups, artistic scandals, and neighborhood legend.

The tour starts at Puerta del Sol, where you'll find Kilometre Zero – the literal origin point of Spain's road network – before heading along Calle de Alcalá. You'll pass the Metrópolis Building, its dome covered in slate scales and 24-carat gold leaf, and the Instituto Cervantes, a former bank whose vaults now hold sealed letters from notable figures, to be opened in the future. You'll then enter El Retiro Park through the Puerta de la Independencia and walk among the Paseo de la Argentina's stone ghosts – statues removed from the Royal Palace after a queen's recurring nightmare about them tumbling down.

From the park, the route continues through the aristocratic Jerónimos neighborhood, past the Prado Museum and Neptune Fountain, to the Congress of Deputies, where bronze lion statues were cast from cannons captured in war. The tour ends at Puerta del Sol, right next to Pastelería La Mallorquina, where a queue and the smell of freshly baked napolitanas make the perfect finale.

On this 60-minute tour, you'll have a chance to:

  • Hear how the Cybele Fountain's lions are actually two mythological lovers condemned to pull a chariot for eternity
  • Learn about the Bank of Spain's underground vault, which allegedly floods automatically if intruders enter
  • Walk past Lhardy restaurant, where 19th-century politicians plotted coups in private dining rooms
  • Discover why the Puerta de Alcalá has two completely different faces
  • Explore Plaza de Santa Ana, where Cervantes and Lope de Vega reportedly traded literary insults as neighbors
  • Visit the Cibeles Palace, a building so grand that locals sarcastically nicknamed it Our Lady of Communications

This tour hands you the keys to a city that never runs out of stories.

Getting There

Route Overview

VoiceMap tours follow a route from a set starting point. It’s how we give turn-by-turn directions and tell a story greater than the sum of its parts.
  1. Total distance
    4km
  2. Distance back to start location
    40.42m

Directions to Starting Point

The tour begins next to the Statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree (Estatua del Oso y el Madroño), at the eastern end of Puerta del Sol, right at the start of Calle de Alcalá. The square is very large and has multiple metro exits and monuments, such as the Equestrian Statue of Charles III. Make sure to head specifically to the Bear and the Strawberry Tree; do not wait in the center of the square or in front of the clock building of the Royal House of Post Office (Real Casa de Correos), as the GPS will only start the route when you are right next to the bear sculpture.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

If you fancy a sweet treat during the tour, I highly recommend stopping by the iconic Pastelería La Mallorquina when you return to Puerta del Sol. For a meal steeped in history, you will walk right past Restaurante Lhardy at Carrera de San Jerónimo No. 8, famous for its cocido madrileño (traditional chickpea-based stew) and historic dining rooms, where booking in advance is advisable. You can also take a break halfway through the route on the benches or shaded areas of El Retiro Park, the city's true green lung.

Best time of day

From sunrise to sunset all year round. Try to avoid weekday rush hours from 8:00 to 9:30 AM and 6:30 to 8:00 PM. Mornings (from 9:00 to 11:30 AM) offer the quietest experience, while the late afternoon is ideal for watching the sunset illuminate the golden domes along the route. If you are doing the tour in the summer, start early to avoid temperatures exceeding 35°C, and always keep an eye out for pickpockets in crowded pedestrian areas like Puerta del Sol or around the major museums.

Precautions

This is a very safe and bustling area of the city, but due to the large crowds of tourists, it is essential to stay highly alert to your belongings and watch your bags or backpacks for pickpockets. It is recommended to take the tour during the day to fully enjoy the monuments, and to always carry a bottle of water, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen during the summer months, and an umbrella if rain is in the forecast.

“Great app. walk around at your own pace, stop where you want, move on or speed up when you want. Read the script before you go or during the commentary, speed it up or replay it. Repeat the tour whenever you like.”
