Royal Madrid: Scandal and Secrets from Puerta del Sol to the Palace
About the Tour
Madrid wasn’t built quietly. It was forged by monarchs obsessed with protocol, anarchists throwing bombs, and power struggles that still echo through its plazas.
This walking tour takes you straight into the royal scandals, assassination plots, hidden convents, and political drama that shaped Spain’s capital.
The tour starts and ends at Puerta del Sol, the symbolic heart of Spain. You’ll make your way into Plaza Mayor, the large square that was once the stage for bullfights, public trials, and royal spectacle. You’ll move down medieval streets and pass the world’s oldest restaurant that still uses a 300-year-old oven. As you walk, you’ll hear the real stories behind Madrid’s grand façades.
During this 90-minute tour, you’ll also have a chance to:
- Discover how cloistered nuns sell cookies without ever being seen
- Stand at the site of the 1906 royal wedding attack that stunned Europe
- Visit the Royal Palace of Madrid, with its 3,418 rooms and a surprisingly flawed original design
- Step inside Posada del Peine, founded in 1610, and learn why jamón once hung from tavern ceilings as protection
- Find the tiny door of Ratón Pérez, Spain’s Tooth Fairy
- See where a bomb was thrown into a royal procession
- Explore the remains of an 11th-century church beneath modern streets
- Hear the legend behind Plaza Mayor’s famous horse statue
This tour is designed for independent travelers who want substance, not surface-level sightseeing. By the end of the walk, you’ll have a sense of Madrid’s architecture, religion, monarchy, and rebellion – all blended into one sharp, unforgettable walk.
Tour Producer
Yohanna Lerman
Hi, I’m Yohanna, an independent audio tour creator based in Madrid, Spain.
I hold a Master’s degree in Medieval and Early Modern History, and I specialize in designing historically rigorous, self-guided audio tours in Madrid and Toledo. For the past six years, Madrid has been both my home and my research field. I continuously explore its streets, archives, museums, and neighborhoods to build tours that are accurate, well-structured, and easy to follow.
My work focuses on transforming academic historical research into clear, engaging audio experiences for independent travelers. Each Madrid audio tour and Toledo audio tour is carefully researched using Spanish and English sources, with special attention to architectural detail, urban development, and the social history behind major landmarks.
I personally test every walking route to ensure clarity of directions and realistic pacing. My tours combine iconic sites with lesser-known locations, allowing visitors to understand not only what they are seeing, but why it matters historically.
With a strong academic background and on-the-ground research experience, my goal is to offer reliable, high-quality self-guided tours for travelers who want depth, context, and independence while exploring Madrid and Toledo.
