History with a side of Tapas: A local's Madrid
About the Tour
Madrid's layered history stretches from its origins as a Moorish fortress over a thousand years ago through centuries of royal intrigue, religious transformation, and cultural evolution. On this walking and tapas tour, you'll discover how the city evolved from a small hunting village to Spain's capital while sampling traditional foods at family-run establishments that have served madrileños for generations.
The tour starts at Plaza Isabel II, near the elegant 1800s Opera Hall. You'll wander through progressively older neighborhoods, from the 19th-century boulevards to medieval streets where images on street signs helped illiterate residents navigate. Along the way, you'll visit century-old tapas bars serving cod croquettes aged in clay-barrel wine, sample cured hams hanging as symbols of religious survival, and discover why Madrid – over 500 kilometers from the coast – operates the world's second-largest seafood market after Tokyo.
You'll explore Plaza Mayor, where nobility once watched bullfights from their balconies, stand at kilometer zero where all Spanish highways begin, and visit the house where Spain's version of the tooth fairy was born. You'll learn about the Spanish Inquisition's unlikely connection to hanging hams, hear stories from the Spanish Civil War, and discover why beer was once considered immoral in Madrid. The tour ends at Casa Nicasio, a restaurant serving traditional Madrid-style paella that combines land, air, and sea in one saffron-scented dish.
On this two-hour tour, you'll have a chance to:
- Step inside Casa Labra, where the Spanish Socialist Party was founded in 1879 and cod-fish croquettes have been made the same way since 1860
- Eat twelve grapes at the clock tower in Puerta del Sol, where madrileños gather every New Year's Eve for this twelve-second tradition
- Stand outside Casa Botin, the world's oldest continuously operating restaurant since 1725, where Hemingway dined and Goya washed dishes
- Visit the Basilica of San Miguel, where the secretive Catholic organization Opus Dei was founded in 1922
- Explore Plaza de la Villa, Madrid's oldest square dating to the early 1400s, with buildings spanning three centuries
- Marvel at Europe's largest royal palace with its 3,478 rooms – double the size of Buckingham or Versailles
This tour combines Madrid's most fascinating historical stories with its most authentic culinary traditions, showing you the city as locals have experienced it for centuries.

Native Spanish Tapas
Native Spanish Tapas isn’t your average food tour. We’re a currently #10 on TripAdvisor — made up of half-American, half-Spanish guides who grew up between cultures and chose Madrid as home.
This isn’t a follow-the-umbrella tour. We take you to the bars our Spanish families took us — where napkins hit the floor, vermouth flows generously, and nobody’s translating the menu unless you ask.
Our mission is simple: take you where real Madrileños go for the good stuff. No gimmicks. No tourist traps. Just proper tapas, proper bars, and great company.
Come hungry and willing to learn!
