Lancaster War Tour: a murder mystery and historical walk set in WWI
About the Tour
Welcome to the heart of Red Rose County! On this walking tour through Lancaster, you‘ll take in the city‘s historical sites, hear how it fared in World War I, and take part in a fun murder-mystery game. You‘ll join the fictitious Arthur Eccleston, a Pall Mall Gazette correspondent, as he guides you through a murder investigation set against the backdrop of the First World War. Together, we’ll time-travel to the year 1916, gathering clues and questioning suspects in the terrible case of Peter Hodgson‘s murder.
The tour starts in Dalton Square, with its classical Georgian architecture. From there you‘ll head to Palatine Hall, once the first openly Catholic church in town. It‘s also where you‘ll first meet Lancashire constable, Sir Harry Philip Parnell Lane, who‘ll give you some intel for your investigation. From there, you‘ll wind your way to Phoenix Street, and the former drill hall that trained up the King‘s Own Royal Regiment before taking in England‘s oldest former motorcar showroom in North Road Junction. At Market Square, you‘ll see the city‘s former town hall before passing Castle Park. Finally, at Westfield Memorial Village, where injured soldiers used to recuperate, we‘ll crack this case wide open.
On this hour-long Lancaster tour, you‘ll have a chance to:
- Hear fictional and historical past residents talk about their hometown, their lives, and the town's industries during the Great War
- Get the inside scoop on the city‘s industries during the Great War
- Find The Storey, a famous institute dedicated to literature, science, and the arts, which was opened to commemorate Queen Victoria‘s golden jubilee

Precautions
During winter, Dalton Square plays host to an ice skating rink, which may limit access to the central Queen Victoria monument. It is advised that you wear sensible footwear for walking and, be warned, that the city is very hilly in places - take care if you struggle walking or if you are in a wheelchair. There are also cobbles, uneven surfaces and some of the pathways are narrower than others so please take care as you walk. It is advised that you do this tour with a friend or as part of a group, particularly at night, sticking to well-lit areas.
