Kyiv Walking Tour: A Thousand Years of History, War, and Resilience

Kyiv is one of Eastern Europe's oldest cities, with over 1,500 years of history layered beneath its streets. On this walking tour, you'll trace that history from medieval Kyivan Rus to the ongoing war with Russia. You'll also hear how a modern European capital has adapted to life under missile attacks, drone strikes, and constant uncertainty.

The tour starts at the Golden Gate, a reconstructed entrance to the ancient city that once welcomed princes, merchants, and diplomats. From there, you'll walk along Volodymyrska Street – one of Kyiv's oldest routes, still partly cobbled – toward Saint Sophia Square, where coronations and revolutions have both unfolded. Along the way, you'll hear how Kyiv's medieval rulers connected the city to European royal courts, and how centuries of upheaval, from Mongol invasions to Soviet rule, shaped what you see around you today.

The route continues through St. Michael's Square, where destroyed Russian tanks and armored vehicles are displayed in the open air, past the Wall of Remembrance with its thousands of photographs of fallen defenders, and into Maidan Nezalezhnosti – Independence Square. This is where the Revolution of Dignity unfolded in 2013–2014, and where families still gather today to leave flowers and candles for those lost in the war. The tour ends at the Independence Monument, the symbolic center of modern Ukraine.
