Food, Flamenco, and Sherry: Exploring the Flavours of Jerez de la Frontera
About the Tour
At the heart of Spain’s vibrant Andalusia region is Jerez de la Frontera, where there’s a treasure trove of culture, gastronomy, and heritage around every corner. On this walking tour around the sherry capital of the world, you’ll stimulate the senses as you take in the old town’s main highlights.
The tour begins in front of Mercado Central de Abastos (the old market) where you’ll have a chance to savour local dishes and hear about centuries-old culinary traditions. You’ll then wander through the winding streets of the historic center, where Moorish and Christian influences intertwine in architectural masterpieces like the Cathedral of Jerez de la Frontera and the Alcázar de Jerez fortress.
As you make your way to Tío Pepe, the bodega where our tour ends, you’ll delve into the world of sherry, known locally as “Jerez”, and uncover the secret of its production. You’ll also learn about flamenco, the soulful music and captivating dance-form that epitomizes Andalusian culture.
On this 90-minute Jerez de la Frontera tour, you’ll have an opportunity to:
- Decode the symbols on the Monumento a Miguel Primo de Rivera y Orbaneja (the memorial to the former Spanish Prime Minister, Miguel Primo de Rivera) in Plaza del Arenal (Arenal Square)
- Visit El Gallo Azul (the Blue Rooster), an upscale tabanco – a traditional eating and drinking establishment
- See Cabildo Antiguo (the old town hall) in Plaza de Asunción, which is known as the “Writers Square”
- Take in an over 250-year-old convent, Basílica Menor de Nuestra Señora del Carmen Coronada
- Learn about Lola Flores, the famous Flamenco dancer, and find out where you can catch a performance
- Hear about the Neolithic, Phoenician, and Roman exhibits in the Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Jerez de la Frontera (the archaeological museum) situated on Plaza del Mercado
- Find out where you can sample a selection of exquisite sherries – each sip a testament to the region’s winemaking expertise
Join me on this tour to marvel at the intricate tilework, ornate courtyards and squares, and centuries-old monuments that bear witness to the city’s storied past.

As a long-term resident with deep knowledge of this region, I’ve developed expertise in local history, wildlife, and cultural traditions that I share through my guided tours and online projects.
I am the founder of several English-language travel websites covering Cádiz, Ronda, Grazalema, and the Caminito del Rey, as well as Wildside Holidays, a platform connecting visitors with activity and wildlife tourism businesses across Spain. My work has been used by travellers, tour operators, and conservation groups looking for reliable, first-hand insights into Andalucía’s landscapes, heritage, and biodiversity.
In addition to guiding, I’m an experienced writer, photographer, and web publisher. My goal is to combine storytelling with practical travel knowledge to help visitors discover both the famous landmarks and the hidden corners of Andalucía. Tips
Places to stop along the way
The route passes many of the iconic places to visit in Jerez such as the Cathedral, the Lola Flores centre, sherry bodegas and the archaeology museum.
Prices and details for entry tickets may vary so check in advance at the tourist office or your hotel. Remember, its not obligatory to stop the tour and enter any of the monuments. Sometimes, admiring them from the outside can be enough.
OPENING TIMES MAY BE SUBJECT TO CHANGE: Mondays are traditionally a day of rest in many tourist towns so some monuments and museums may be closed. 10 am is the usual opening time for monuments and museums. Some places are only open in the morning and others close at lunch time (2pm to 5 pm) opening again in the evening.
The route also passes through some of the iconic foodie
plazas filled with tabancos, bars and restaurants so there is a lot to choose from. I prefer to visit 4 or 5 places to sample different tapas rather than just one place for a big meal.
Best time of day
The tour can be done at any time of day but earlier in the morning (especially in the summer months) for some pre lunch tapas stops or a late afternoon stroll finishing at a great restaurant would be ideal.
Check the opening times of museums and other monuments in the tourist office on Plaza Arenal or ask in your hotel.
Precautions
IMPORTANT NOTE: The plaza de Mercado (Where the archaeologic museum is located NOT the food market) is undergoing a major renovation and reconstruction. This does not affect a visit to the museum which is open as normal. The works are due to be finished by spring 2025.
