About the Tour

Ephesus wasn’t just a city; it was a global capital of commerce, culture, and the cradle of early Christianity.

On this self-guided walking tour, you’ll navigate remarkably preserved marble streets, grand temples, and elite villas that offer a rare glimpse into the daily lives of Roman citizens. You’ll also experience the grandeur of the Roman Empire’s most vibrant metropolis.

Your journey begins at the Upper Gate, leading you through the heart of the city’s administrative power. You’ll walk the same path as ancient senators and merchants, making your way down the prestigious Curetes Street and passing through the monumental Hercules Gate. Along the way, I’ll point out other highlights and ‘must-see’ landmarks.

As you descend, you’ll see a skyline dominated by the Library of Celsus – the third-largest library of the ancient world, and a masterpiece of Roman architecture. Along the way, you’ll hear about the secrets of Roman engineering, from sophisticated hypocaust heating systems to the ingenious urban planning that once connected this city to a bustling Mediterranean harbor.

The tour ends at the Ancient Christian Church of Virgin Mary, site of the 431 AD Ecumenical Council, where pivotal Christian doctrines were shaped.

On this 90-minute tour, you’ll also have a chance to:

  • Stand before the Library of Celsus with its iconic two-story façade, built as both a monument to knowledge and a heroic tomb
  • Explore the Terrace Houses (the ‘Villas of the Rich’) to see incredibly preserved mosaics, frescoes, and private baths
  • Step into the Great Theater, a massive arena that seated 30,000 spectators and hosted Saint Paul’s historic sermons
  • Admire the Temple of Hadrian’s intricate reliefs, depicting the legendary founding of Ephesus
  • Visit the public latrines and the Commercial Agora to learn how Romans networked, traded, and socialized

This isn’t just a history lesson; it’s an immersive experience designed for the modern traveler.

Whether you are interested in architectural marvels, biblical history, or ancient urban engineering, this tour offers a curated flow that avoids the crowds and hits every major landmark.

Meet Your Guide: Özgür – A Lifetime Dedicated to Turkey’s Heritage

Merhaba! I’m Özgür. My journey into the heart of Turkey’s history began with a rigorous academic foundation, earning degrees in Tourism and Guiding from Akdeniz and Cappadocia Universities, followed by a Master’s in Guiding at Akdeniz. Since 2009, I have been more than just a guide; I am a storyteller and an explorer who has traversed every corner of this beautiful country.

My career has been defined by a passion for the "slow and authentic." I spent two transformative years working with the Culture Routes Society, where I helped develop and preserve Turkey’s historic trekking paths. From leading Arkeo-Hike adventures along the rugged Lycian Way to organizing Hike & Sail expeditions on traditional gulets for international agencies, I have always sought to connect travelers with the "invisible hand" of our local culture.

Now based in Izmir, I’ve turned my focus to the magnificent city of Ephesus. My mission is to move beyond the typical tourist paths. Using my background in archaeology and cultural routes, I’ve curated this experience to reveal the hidden engineering of Roman baths, the intimate lives within the Terrace Houses, and the sacred echoes of the Church of Mary.

I don’t just show you ruins; I invite you to feel the pulse of the ancient Mediterranean. Whether you are a history buff or a nature lover, I am here to share my deep love for my homeland and ensure you leave with a piece of Turkey in your heart.

Welcome to Ephesus! Let’s explore the layers of history together.

Tips

Places to stop along the way

Near the library of Celsus there is a little kiosk where you can buy water and some refreshments.

Best time of day

There’s a nearby town often visited by big cruise ships. If you want to avoid the crowds of the cruise ship guests, the best time would be early morning or late afternoon.

Precautions

To help you enjoy this experience, it’s important that you feel comfortable both physically and mentally. No matter the season, please make sure you have enough water with you, and wear comfortable shoes, especially ones that are good for walking on marble paths.

Depending on the weather, it’s a good idea to bring a hat or a raincoat. There’s no shelter from the sun or rain inside the site, so dress accordingly.

Also, keep in mind that once we enter through the ticket gate, there won’t be any restroom facilities until the end of the tour. There’s a public restroom across the road from the upper gate entrance, so you might want to use it before we begin.
