Inside the Uffizi Galleries: An Art History Guide
About the Tour
Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance, the artistic style that changed the course of Western art.
On this tour of the Uffizi Galleries, created by an art historian, you’ll learn how to truly see and appreciate masterpieces by Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and more. Instead of just telling you the basics of the famous paintings you’re looking at, this guide asks questions, enhancing your experience in the museum and beyond.
The tour starts at the entrance to the Uffizi, originally built as offices for the Medici administration in the 1560s. You’ll follow the museum’s chronological path, starting with Giotto’s naturalism and the International Gothic style’s decorative elegance. You’ll hear the stories behind iconic works like Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Primavera, along with their complex mythological and philosophical meanings.
You also get a sense of Leonardo’s innovative use of light and shadow and Michelangelo’s sculptural approach to the human form in the two dimensions. Along the way, you’ll learn how to compare similar subjects across time periods, recognize symbolic elements, and understand how paintings relate to each other through style, subject, and technique.
During this 120-minute tour, you’ll have a chance to:
- Examine Leonardo da Vinci’s unfinished Adoration of the Magi, which reveals his revolutionary painting technique
- Study Michelangelo’s Doni Tondo, the only panel painting definitively attributed to the sculptor
- Discover how Raphael synthesized the innovations of Leonardo and Michelangelo into his own elegant style
- Explore Northern European influences on Italian art through van der Goes’ remarkable Portinari Altarpiece
- Appreciate Titian’s sumptuous Venus of Urbino and the distinctive Venetian approach to color and form
- Admire Bronzino’s portraits of the Medici family members who once graced these halls
- Witness Caravaggio’s dramatic and highly influential style
This expertly-created tour will transform how you see and understand Renaissance art, giving you insights that will enhance your entire visit to Florence.

Alexandra Korey
I'm Alexandra Korey, a Canadian art historian and blogger who has been living in Florence, Italy for about 25 years. I came to the city on an undergraduate summer program and fell in love with the city and its art. I proceeded to get a Masters in art history through Syracuse University's program in Florence, followed by a PhD in art history from the University of Chicago. My research on Italian Renaissance art helped me spend more time in Florence, where I eventually met my Florentine husband and moved here.
When I started my blog arttrav.com in 2004, my goal was to make art accessible through what was then a relatively emerging technology. I liked the idea of being able to offer university-level insights to anyone who wanted to learn, outside of the constraints of the classroom. Throughout my varied career in teaching and in communications, I've continued to share my passion for art online.
When not working or creating content for my Instagram (@arttrav), you can find me playing tennis, hiking or sewing.

Directions to Starting Point
The starting point for this tour is Door 2 of the Uffizi, which is the entrance for reserved tickets (which you have, right?).
You will be in "Piazzale degli Uffizi" which is a U-shaped area formed by the building's two wings, with the Arno river at the far end. Looking towards the Arno, Door 2 is on the left side about halfway down. There will be a bit of a line-up for security. After security you will go up 2 flights of stairs.
Door 1, just to the left of Door 2, offers an accessible entrance and elevator for wheelchair users.
Tips
Places to stop along the way
You can take a break at anytime in the gallery.
Best time of day
I strongly recommend booking tickets in advance; print your e-ticket in order to scan it at the entrance. Only use the official website uffizi.it. The early morning and end of the day slots are the least crowded. Check online for special summer evening openings.
Precautions
There is a metal detector at the entrance. Bulky bags and umbrellas must be checked at the free cloakroom, so travel light. Food and drink are not permitted inside, with the exception of a maximum 0.5 liter plastic water bottle. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
